Mica's Photo's

  • Again, it was so hard to choose a few photo's of Mica.
  • He hasn't gotten his pictures taken by himself in awhile.
  • He is getting soooooo BIG!

A Little Nervous

  • I gave a 20 to 30 minute talk this morning at work. I talked in a room full of high school art teachers. A few people I work with along with my boss were in the room too.
  • I have to admit I was a little nervous. Probably because I was speaking to a different audience then what I'm used to. I feel this same nervousness when I get up to talk on the day of graduation. I sometimes feel like talking to people that are teachers themselves are critiquing me.
  • I give presentations for 2 hours, 3 days a week to college students, and do fine. I've set up in my mind that most of the new students are younger then me, just starting out, timid and again new. Later on when I have the seniors I know them and just feel comfortable.
  • I talked about my own work:
  • My main topic was how the gap between painting and illustration is getting smaller.
  • I used Mark English as an example:
Mark English's Illustration's
    Mark English's Painting
  • Fred Otnes was another main example.
  • He made 3 shifts in his artistic career: A realistic illustrator, decided to incorporate printing techniques into his illustrations and now a painter. Here is his work:
Fred Otnes' Illustration's
Fred Otnes' Painting
  • My talk went well. I always think after talking, "Why was I nervous?"
  • One of the high school art teacher's went to Kansas City Art Institute (where I went), so we had a lovely talk! Another teacher was headed down to Savannah College of Art and Design for a workshop (where I went to grad school). He once lived in Atlanta, we talked about that as well. We had a great conversation!
  • A few of my co-worker's heard some of the high school art teachers say, "This is the best workshop we've been to!" That is so nice to hear! Especially since we devote a lot of time into doing what we do here.
  • I liked the speaker my boss had come in from SKAR advertising. His talk was on Social Networking. That was interesting to me.

Mica Dressed Up

Mother and Son

  • So Isaak's not smiling. But I thought I better post this.
  • I just don't get a lot of photo's of me with the kids since I'm usually behind the camera.

Father and Son

Dinner

  • We went out to dinner for Mommy's birthday on the 21st.
  • Mica tried on his shirt that he's wearing for Daddy's show in a few weeks.
  • He wanted to wear it. He said that he wants to wear it tomorrow too. I told him, "No, you'll be outside playing tomorrow and it will get hot and messy."
  • Mica does look nice!
  • Isaak saw that Mica was standing by the tree to get his photo taken.
  • I went to go put Isaak in the car. He started whimpering and pointed at the tree.
  • He wanted his picture taken too.

Dork

  • Mica said to Daddy this morning, "Daddy you're a dork."
  • I couldn't help but laugh.
  • I'm sure Mica doesn't even understand what a dork even is.

Odd Habits

  • Isaak's getting at the age where he has odd habits. I remember when Mica went through this stage.
  • Mica tried to blow bubbles and drink bath water. Now Isaak's doing the same. I stop Isaak and say, "Isaak that's gross water. We clean ourselves in this water, if you want a drink from the kitchen I'll get you one."
  • He puts his fingers and food in his drink. I weaned him from a sippy cup, now I'm thinking if he doesn't stop putting things in his drink we may have to go back to a sippy cup.
  • He tried hitting start on the microwave twice when I was cooking dinner.
  • If hats are laying around he wants them on his head. Sometimes more then one on his head.
  • There was tissue paper on the floor, and Isaak was trying to wipe his behind with it like he was done with going potty.
  • There was a gift bag laying around from Father's Day and Isaak has been walking around filling it with small toys, emptying it and filling it again.

Birthday Treats

You can read more about these Pudding Cups here and here.

Fun Plex

  • I decided to go to Fun Plex for the evening of my birthday. I wanted to play miniature golf with my kids for the first time.
  • I just needed to get away. I had kind of a bad day in the kitchen, which usually things run pretty smoothly in the baking department. You can read about that disaster here. Fortunately, I tried making my birthday treats for work today, and everything went pretty smooth.
  • I thought it was funny that Daddy started out showing the boys how to hold the golf club. It was cute, except that Isaak's only 2 years old. I was thinking that there was no possible way that Isaak will remember how to hold a golf club.
  • Then Daddy kept telling the boys to get off the green while he played. I said, "Daddy I don't think the boy's know what the green is." Daddy showed them what the green was. Mica's like, "That's not green Daddy!" He was right it wasn't the color green. :)
  • I thought it was funny watching Mica play. He'd move the ball around to get a better hit at it.
  • Isaak just liked setting the ball in the hole, which was just fine with me.
  • When we went to leave Mica and Isaak spotted the video games. We do not play any at home.
  • They both sat in their seats to their car games, and acted as though they were playing, but they were not.

Training Pants

  • Daddy brought up the other day that they should really make some brand of toddler underwear that has Velcro on the sides like some pull-up brands do.
  • This would be great for when they have accidents, don't you think?

It's My Birthday Today

  • Well I turned 34 today. Do I feel old? No not really.
  • I feel old around my students and my niece who was born when I was in college and now she's almost driving! My students talk about how great the 90's were, and know nothing about the 80's.
  • But then the majority of the people I work with are all older then me. That makes me feel young. They were asking me about illustrators last week saying, "Do you remember when Mark English did the Time Magazine covers?" I said, "Nope I don't remember that, but I know his artwork. Ya, he started being a fine art painter when I was a year old."
  • My birthday will be celebrated in early July.
  • My question to you (readers), do the pictures (above) of me look more like my youngest Isaak or my oldest Mica (below)? I'm just always curious as to what people think.

City Life on Father's Day

  • Daddy was pretty busy at work this weekend.
  • He came home today on Father's Day around 5:30 to play with the boys while I made dinner.
  • They built a city of just about every kind of toy Mica and Isaak have. If you click on the picture you can see Lego's, Little People, Team GeoTrax, Imaginext and more.
  • Then when the boys went down for the night, Daddy went back to work in an unhappy mood.
  • He didn't want to go back in.

Where Art Thou Pup?

  • I read on Jolly Mom's site that in order to remove dust mites from stuffed animals you can put them in a plastic bag, stick them in the freezer for 3 or more hours and then vacuum them.
  • I put Isaak's puppy in the freezer 3 days ago. I forgot about it.
  • I remembered it when I went to put his sheets on his crib after washing them.
  • I couldn't find the puppy. A good clue that I need to clean out my freezer!
  • Daddy finally found Isaak's favorite puppy. It's now tucked safely in his arms dust mite free.

I Have a Son Named Two

  • I asked Isaak, "What's your name?"
  • He replied, "Two."
  • I said, "No, your name is Isaak Jaxon Apel."
  • He said, "No, I Two."
  • I said, "No, silly you are two years old, and your name is Isaak Jaxon Apel."
  • I asked again, "Isaak, what is your name?"
  • He again replied with, "I Two."

Sick Tot

  • Isaak's been fussy and needy all day! Well more like for 3 days.
  • I thought he was cutting a tooth because he bit me twice, which is very unusual for him. He has messy stools, and gnawed on the frozen chew toy I gave him. He also kept pointing to his mouth.
  • He started crying in his crib at nap time. I was letting him cry for a few minutes to see if he'd go back to sleep. I went in to get him when his cry got louder (only a few minutes had past). There was throw up on his pillow!
  • I fed him chocolate pudding after lunch, so you can only imagine how his throw up looked!
  • Then of course he wanted to be held, and not cleaned up. What a mess, and I feel bad for him!
  • So...he must be cutting a tooth, and sick?! Not sure.
  • Now he's playing, chasing a balloon around and singing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, minus the word "little."

Happy Faters Day!

  • A Happy Fathers Day goes out to Daddy of course. Grandpa Spiehs (my dad), Grandpa Apel (daddy's dad) and Great Grandpa Kent (my mom's dad).
  • All of them are great people. I wish them all the best.

I Set the Alarm Off

  • I went to work to grab the paycheck I left behind. I accidentally set the alarm off. I thought I punched the code in right.
  • I was in complete panic mode.
  • I was searching for the magic word I'm supposed to tell the security people in order for them to turn it off. I got it! I've never set it off before.
