Sing, Sing a Song Saturday

I started doing what I call Sing, Sing a Song Saturday.  I'm going to post one song on Saturdays that the boys or I like.

The song may be part of a movie, a kid's video or just a song we like. I'll try and include why we like it and/or the history of the song/singer.

This week I'm covering a long time favorite. I started following Ani Difranco about 12 years ago. Many have heard of her, many have not. Those that haven't are the reason why I'm covering her. She has sold many CDs, but she's self published. She even creates all her own artwork for her CD covers. She pushes the envelope big time with singing about government issues, woman's rights and other hot topics. She is so great to listen to live! Almost all her songs on YouTube are live. I really couldn't find one single hyped up video. Most of her money she gets is from shows and not CD sales. Her parents got divorced when she was 15; instead of moving in with one of them, she started supporting herself. That was both good and bad. She was raped, got pregnant when she was young and had an abortion. She speaks out about abstinence. She even wrote a song about how moms should teach their daughters about abstinence. She just has a lot of energy and thought put into her songs. I'm going to try and pick out a few songs that won't offend anyone. Again her music is very out there. If you'd like to hear more of her work, please do. Just look up Ani Difranco on YouTube. Her own record label studio can be found at Righteous Babe Records.

Her style has changed somewhat throughout the years. It still remains that she's a folk artist.

She just came out with a new album in 2012 called ¿Which Side Are You On?.

The first video I'm going to show of hers, she is not in at all. She had a contest over the summer, where people submitted videos of their interpretation of the song. Then she sliced and dices peoples videos to include everyone within one video. The song is called, Mariachi. I'm going to call it a fan video.

Little Plastic Castle

This one is titled: 32 Flavors. One verse of the lyrics in this one are:

And god help you if you are an ugly girl
course too pretty is also your doom
cause everyone harbors a secret hatred
for the prettiest girl in the room
and god help you if you are a phoenix
and you dare to rise up from the ash
a thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
while you are just flying back

She speaks out about abstinence.

I'm not against it, not at all, but I am for it with what I consider the other obvious discussion, the one about condoms. Because too many kids will have sex. no. matter. what. And I want them to be as safe as possible.
