Random Tid Bits

  1. I was a little disappointed once this week. I brought in ice cream to my students. I was going over a logo/packaging change for Gifford's Ice Cream.

We don't have Gifford's Ice Cream here, so I bought other crazy flavors (3 to be exact). It felt nice to do something like bring the student's ice cream for the AM lecture. It certainly wasn't for me. I didn't have any of it.

The students dove into the ice cream. In fact many had 2 servings. There were only 2 students that didn't eat any. Guess how many said, "Thank you."? Zero. Was I expecting a, "Thank you."? Not really. It's just that when you go out to do something nice - I bought everything with my own money - it's sad that no one said those magic words. There are 17 students in the class, and not 1 said anything. They just devoured it like a pack of wolves.

When I came back and mentioned my morning to a co-worker, she said that happened to her last year when she brought in Halloween candy. Are kind words, and gratitude slipping through the cracks of future generations? Thankfully my thoughts towards future generations was restored when my 2 sons thanked me for a serving them ice cream after dinner.

  2. We have a wedding coming up. They are registered at a honeymoon place. I can't help but to think that my money is going towards alcohol. They are big drinkers.  I guess if that's what they want, that's what they get. I just worry about one of them. My husband's family has alcoholism on his side.

  3. I have 1 student in my first year class that likes to debate with me during lecture. While I love future thinkers of America, it really throws me off track. Honestly I can not remember what I was even talking about after he chimes in. I was going over the difference between transparent, semi transparent, and opaque. He was trying to tell me that transparent was the same as opaque, which it's not. I told the students that the definition of transparent and semi-transparent can be convoluted, just like many art terms can be. Opaque is where you can't see through an object at all. That one can't be argued. In this class the difference of the terms are:

Transparent - You can see through it totally like glass, clear plastic wrap rolled out, or a bubble.:
    Source
Semi Transparent - You can see through it slightly. Such as a stain glass window, or
old school camera film rolled out.

    Source
Opaque - Where you can't see through the object at all. Not transmitting of light. Such as a brick, or a wood door.

  4. I went down a pant size. Woo hoo! Actually many of my pants weren't fitting at all. I had to go buy new ones. Now I'm buying smaller shirts. I used to buy XL, and actually got a size medium the other day.

  5. We're still on our track of watching classics. The boys recently watched The Absent Minded Professor otherwise known as Flubber. We have Old Yeller, and Bednobs and Broomsticks ready to watch. Freaky Friday is still on hold at the library. The boys seem to be enjoying them. Daddy rolled his eyes with The Shaggy Dog and The Absent Minded Professor though. I have to admit they are odd.  I like the memory trip though.

I can not believe that not one of the kids said thank you. I would be appalled if my boys behaved that way.

That is sad that no one said thank you. You certainly went the extra mile. I have thought about bringing in a juice sampling for a certain unit. Maybe I shouldn't bother...

Bedknobs and Broomsticks --- LOVE that one :)

as for the no "thank you" I totally see it... and it irks me...

I was the greeter for B's school the other morning... Held the door open and greeted all the kids...
Every time, I would say "good morning" or "have a great day" out of all the bus riders --- ONLY 1 said it back (that wasn't in B's class)
I was shocked...

That makes me so sad about the students not saying thank you. I hate to think it really is dying. :(

I will say, Allison has her asshole days. And I mean asshole with every fiber of my being. Yet, even in the midst of acting like one, she still finds it in her to say "thank you" once we have negotiated terms of what started the fit about in the first place. I can't imagine a person not saying thank you, especially for a treat. I even thank my Zumba instructor after each workout lol. Then again, I tend to be over polite most of the time.

Congrats on going down a pant size.

Boo to the lecture interupter (some people seem to like to hear themselves talk).

And boo to no thank you's!

We went to three weddings over the summer and didn't get any thank you cards for gifts. I was only a little surprised. Manners do seem to be dropping by the wayside a lot more than they were just in our generation of being kids.

How rude that not one of your students said Thank you! Man... I guess you won't want to do something nice for them again... at least I wouldn't.

Congrats on the weight loss! I think manners have gone down quite dramatically. I taught my kids to say "please" and "thank you" from the beginning and I expect them to say it.
