That Doesn't Work

My boys are pretty good about doing tasks. Mica takes out the garbage, Isaak dumps the compost, they each take things down to the recycle bin, Mica will get clothes out of the dryer to bring up, Isaak's good at sweeping, and the list goes on.

One thing that they are not good at is getting their clothes out in the morning, or at bath time. I get their clothes out in the morning, throw them on their bed. If I'm missing anything like socks or undies they each yell out, "Mom you forgot to..."

I then reply, "Get it yourself!"

Then I hear grumbles. It's like they are cussing, but actual cuss words don't come out.

This weekend Dad had a gig at our local art museum.

I was making fried chicken, sweet potatoes, and green beans. Before I started making dinner I told the boys to go start taking their baths, so we could start watching the third harry Potter movie.

When Mica was done I heard him say, "Mom get my pjs!"

I said, "Mica my fingers are sticky with egg and chicken. You need to get your own pjs."

Mica said again, "Mom get my pjs! I'm cold"

Apparently he didn't hear me.

I said, "Take your cold self to your room. You need to get your own pjs." only louder.

Even after he heard me he kept repeating himself. It was as if he wanted me to drop what I was doing to go help him. If I wasn't so tired myself (I woke up that day at 4 AM) I would have taken back watching Harry Potter.

It's during a time like that where I was thinking, Is he going to be like that with his wife someday?

I wouldn't say my kids are lazy. But man they sure could grow up with getting their own clothing.

They all have to try the limits, to see if they stay the same... it actually makes them feel more secure when they do.

LOL sounds to me like you are going to have to retrain them. They think it is your job to get their clothes out.

Allison used to pull that all the time too. Took about a year of her shivering on the bathroom floor until I was good and ready before she would remember to get them herself before getting in the tub.

I also love how I get blamed when they can't find something. They automatically say "Mom. Where did you put my xxx?" Why the hell am I getting blamed for moving their stuff? Of course, they always find it later and realized they were actually the one that moved it, but it still never stops them from blaming me again the next time.

My wife buys all my clothing, shoes, etc. I have no idea what sizes I wear but she does. I hate to shop for clothes and I hate to try things on.I would look like a homeless person but for her. I do get my own clothes out of the closet, unless we are going to town then she picks out what I wear. Probably cave women picked out the furs for their husbands too.

My husband's mom didn't make her three kids do anything when they were little as far as chores go. My husband just turned 50 and he won't put a shirt in the laundry, rinse a dish, make a bed... honestly, not a thing. I have to run around behind him far more than the kids. I gave up years ago trying to get him to do it. That made me a firm firm firm believer in making sure the kids are pitching right in consistently and regularly!

My two will try to do this to me, too. My response is always the same: "Your legs don't look broken to me".
