Out of the Box Saturday

It's all about me discovering something that is different. I don't want to post things that you and I have more than likely heard before. I want to find something different. I'll cover something sing | songy one week, and artsy | fartsy the next.

I'm in love with Matt Corby. Not really. But I do love his voice. He can hit high notes and low ones to. Oh...he's hawt to. How do we not know his name like crazy in the US is beyond me.

He's an Australian singer-songwriter that works mostly independently.

Random Tid Bits

  1. I'm having trouble getting into the Christmas buying spirit. I think it's because it's been so warm. I'll have to look in the closet to see what I have already. I tend to buy year round. I know I have some bigger gifts, and smaller ones to. I did buy Santa paper. Our Santa paper has Santa on it.

I bought Isaak this gold fingernail trimmer for his stocking. It's the little things you know. He loves gold. Mica will have one that says, "Smarty Pants" on it. Smarty is his nickname from Grandpa, so it works for him.

  2. I did muster up enough Christmas spirit to make my own wrapping paper. Except for Santa paper. Santa paper comes with Santa on it. I'm pretty sure the boys have never picked up on this; they've never mentioned any about it. Back to me making my own paper: There are these Star Wars snowfake templates that you can download for free here. Since we mainly have boys in our family I made a bunch of them, scanned them, and colored them in Photoshop. I repeated them as a pattern.

It's a little hard to see because the images are on such a big sheet of paper. Here they are:

    Tie Interceptor
    C3PO
    R2D2
    Stormtrooper

There's a bunch of different Star Wars snowflakes. I repeated them to make wrapping paper, and printed them on 11x17 paper. I added gift tags that say, "May the force be with you this Christmas!" Each pattern is a different color to match the kid in our families favorite color.

  4. Travis was looking for his pants. Like 4 pairs. He was getting irritated, and blaming me for his pants being awol, since I do the laundry. Of course this was on a morning where we were running late. Finally it dawned on me that I gave one of the boys a stack of his pants to hand to him to put away. Isaak swore he gave him the stack. Isaak handed him a stack of boxers. It was Mica that was told to hand Travis his stack of pants. Mica put them in his locker with his own pants. How he had room is beyond me. I'm just glad he found them.

  5. Travis likes to sleep like this:

No I'm not the most pleasant person to sleep with. I have been known to grind my teeth, snore, and talk, but I've been better since I've gotten a mouth guard. He's slept this way since he was in middle school.

His roommate (one of our good friends) sleeps this way to. He says it's like sleeping in your own personal tent. I have to wash 2 pillowcases instead of 1 when I do laundry.

  6. Me: "Mica put your pants in the hamper they are dirty." Me the next day: "Mica why do you have your dirty pants on?" Mica: "I didn't know they were dirty."

Me: "Isaak: why are all these pants in your hamper?" Isaak, "Because I didn't want to put them in my drawer."

    This happens all the time!

Aquarium

I have to apologize, I said I'd post something on the zoo once a week. I've failed. I still have more parts of the zoo to feature. There's just so many pictures to go through. I shouldn't make promises I can't keep.

Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium didn't always have that last part as part of it's name. It's true we don't have a big aquarium like the one I went to in Chicago. The aquarium that is attached to Omaha's zoo is amazing. If you visit, don't ignore it. It's not a separate fee to get in.

When you walk in there's a welcoming gigantic blue tank

The tank is filled with mostly these fish. I'll admit it, I didn't write all their names down. My family was already being very patient with me, so I could take pictures. Lots of pictures.

The bottom of the tank is filled with what looks like silver glitter. I know it's not that, but that's what it looks like.

Then we saw my favorite, the puffins and penguins. The penguins were being fed, so they were extra active.

Waiting for food.

Swimming for food, or just for fun!

Mingling:

Quiet time for this one:

They have a glass bubble kids can go in to see them swimming. You really feel like you're part of the penguin family when you're in the "bubble". Mica stayed there for awhile. He loves the penguins. Mica told me a joke from one of his books, "I wish the Antarctic had tornadoes! Then penguins would be able to fly."

Travis was laughing at me because I asked if the white things on the sides of a Puffin's head is fur, hair, or feathers? I know it's feathers, but it looks like hair.

More than the sharks, eels creep me out.

These little eel like things stuck up out of the sea floor. Weird!

There's also a lot of tanks consisting of fish (I don't know all their names), sea plants, and starfish.

This one looks like it's say, "Hello!".

There's a gigantic glass arch tank that you can walk under and through. It consists of sharks, stingrays, sea turtles and more.

He or she is waving at you.

The jellyfish remind me of lava lamps. I love taking photos of them!

I'm not sure Omaha needs an aquarium. The zoo has a big enough one to get a taste of aquatic plants and animals.

WW: Hat to the Side {Linky}

We went to the zoo this last weekend. I asked my oldest son Mica, "Can you please stand here, so I can get your picture?" This is what I got:

Mica looks like a skater kid. That's not his personality at all.

Since Mica had his hat off to the side Isaak thought he'd put his hat on that way as well:

The hat off to the side really looks odd on Isaak. It cracks me up that whenever Isaak wants his photo taken he crossed his arms like he's praying that I get a good photo of him.

My boys rarely wear a hat, since they can't have one on in school. Do you wear hats often?

Our zoo is the one that made national headlines. There was a lady that sneaked in, to pet a tiger. She got her hand bit, and has to have a few surgeries. We didn't pet a tiger. Just a shark. ;)
