Isaak still not in love with reading. He's so much the same as Mica, yet so very different.
I found a few tricks that work for Isaak:
- Hold a bookmark, or paper under the lines of type. Then he won't forget where he's at.
- As much as he wants to read picture books, I have to push him to move on. With picture books he guesses the words based on the pictures. He insisted that chapter books were too hard for him. I had him read an easier chapter book, and he read it better than the most of his picture books.
Do you have any tips to get kids to read?
My little one doesn't LOVE to read either, but my two can earn time with their electronics by reading. Bribery? Maybe, but it works.

Mariah is a voracious reader. Allison only picks up a book sporadically. I wish she would read more, but I'll take what I can get.

ReplyDeleteLong ago, there was an outfit called "scholastic book services." They would come to your school and sell cheap books, paperbacks, for kids at very low prices. There would be a book fair, and each class got to go to the library and buy some of these books. My mom and dad were teachers and each got a few books free. My siblings and I would pick out the ones we wanted. I can't remember ever not reading. In fact, I still have one of those books I got in sixth grade. It is about U.S. submarine operations in the Pacific in WW2.
ReplyDeleteLil Pumpkin loves books but most of the time, she'd want me to read to her hahaha. But I think it's ok as kids will learn at their own pace and at the very least, the interest is there.

I enjoy reading so much that it sometimes surprises me that there are others that don not feel the same. GG is 5 and reads at a low 3rd grade level and would much rather have picture books. Man, who also loves to read like me, says to just let them enjoy reading whatever they wnat. Reading is reading. I had to help her find books that really interest her like Heidi Hecklebeck and Junie B Jones. She still doesn't like to read the chapter books on her on so when I read with her, I tell her we will take turns with the pages.
