Sounds like an odd thing to be thankful for!
Mica's invited to two birthday parties on Saturday. Kind of an odd day to have a birthday party with many people going out of town. They are on the opposite parts of town. One is to the north and the other is way out west. Luckily they are at different times.
He likes both kids, so he's going. It isn't like when I was a kid. I played with one girl in our neighborhood at least once a week it seemed. Some weeks we'd play at each others house daily. We'd walk and meet each other. Kids can't walk around today by themselves. Mica's friends live here and there; rarely does he get calls to have him come and play. It isn't because he isn't liked. Mica is liked by many. It's just a different world packed with busy working parents. It's a non trusting world. I get nervous putting my kids in other parents hands. So sad, but that's how it is.
Mica being invited to birthday parties is a good thing. Even if it's an odd day of the year, and we're double booked.
During my lunch break today I'll go to Target to get two gifts. I want to avoid shopping on Thanksgiving, and the day after! I have no idea what these two boys have. I told Mica that I'd be sure to ask for gift receipts. That way they can return what I buy if needed.
Do you try and put a gift receipt with gifts?
My husband and I talk about that sometimes - how things were different back in the day. We could hop on our bike, go meet up with some kids in the neighborhood and be gone ALL DAY without checking in once. Now, I freak if my kids are out of my sight for 12 seconds.
ReplyDeletethings are so much different than back then... i dont trust other people to go and let broxton play at a friends house.. but then again, there are really no kids near us...
ReplyDeleteWe never played with other kids because we lived too far out. But there were four of us kids, all spaced out evenly a year apart.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, it's a different world. Even more so for me, because I was your boys age in the 1950's!
I do think gift receipts are great, just in case the gift is not what the person wants. I would rather the person get something they want instead of wasting money. I agree that it was different when I was a child also. I walked around the neighborhood by myself. I never let my kids do that when they were young.

Oh I agree on the gift receipts, they make exchanges & returns so much easier. When our boys were growing up we lived in a small town ( 1 square mile big!), and our yard seemed to be one of the local hang outs, even though it was one of the smaller ones. We also didn't have to worry about them running around the neighborhood and they knew they had to be in before the street lights came on. I miss those days, add to the fact they both live in different states now, It is hard to even travel to visit with them!

I never give a receipt with a present for a kid's birthday party. I try my best to get them something I think they will really enjoy, and if they don't - I'm sure the parent could always turn around and re-gift it! Actually - I also keep my eye out for sales and I have a box with gifts ready to go - just in case!
ReplyDeleteIt can be tough buying gifts.. especially with other kids as they can be quite picky heh. We don't usually give gifts with receipts over here though..

Your post made me nostalgic dear.. Things have definitely changed a lot now... Trust me, I find selecting a gift for someone the most tedious task ever :-)

ReplyDeleteI get a gift receipt always for my MIL because I'm 50/50 w/getting her gifts she likes. I get them for my son and his wife too because though I really love her and love her being a part of the family, I don't know her well enough to know 'the perfect gift' for her yet. :)

Allison's bday is 12/19, so we always compete with winter break and kids going out of town. We are doing her party the first weekend in December so kids will be able to attend this year.

I usually don't include gift receipts, but that's because I usually forget to do so.
