WW: Abandon Castle {Linky}

We went to Kansas City, Missouri this weekend. It was a fun trip!

We were driving to our hotel, and noticed this abandon castle:

I didn't know why such a cool building was abandon like that. Thankfully I have tons of friends that live in the Kansas City area. One told me it's the Vine Street Castle also known as Workhouse Castle.

Here's what it looked like when it was first built:

It was a workhouse jail. Women would work in the building to better themselves. It's been used in other ways.

Now the limestone structure has no roof, or flooring.

They plan on repurposing the building to be a theater. I hope it happens.

Is there an old abandon building by where you live?

  1. That is a great looking castle. I hope it is renovated into a theater. That would be cool. We do have lots of abandoned homes in our town. I pass by this abandoned pink house on my way to school every day....it's eerie and sad at the same time. The yard is all overgrown, it needs a makeover for sure....

  2. I wish there was an interesting building like the castle near me. Other than some houses that are in foreclosure no abandoned buildings.

  6. It is amazing those get abaondoned. I lived in a city that had a jail that had a lot of 'castle-like' features. So weird...but I guess it could make sense. :)

  8. I understand a lot of old castles sell for super cheap because no one can afford the upkeep of these drafty old places.

  9. So sad that something so beautiful would be left to rot like that. I do hope they are able to restore it and turn it into something useful!

  13. I didn't even know there were castles in the US. Big houses–yes. Castles–no. Although I guess it wasn't a "real castle", just looks like one. I bet it would make for an amazing theater! There is no good reason architecture like that should not be reused rather than sit abandoned.
