Happy Halloween!

This year I was at a loss as to what I wanted to be. I could have been a witch, I thought about trying to be Salvador Dali (he's an artist for people that are not art fans), and I thought about being a McDonald's worker (I have much of the stuff from a review).

Then I decided I wanted to be a cactus.

One day I poked big toothpicks in a green sweater that I've had for a long time. On the backsides I hot glued buttons. Then trimmed them with a fingernail trimmer. By the end of that day I was done! I did great not hot gluing my fingers the first 1/2, but toward the second 1/2 I burnt them often. I don't even think I was careless. It's just that I had the task of getting them in the sleeves, which was tight quarters.

Then I had to get fabric to make blooms, for my cactus.

I ordered a terra cotta skirt, which I was excited about. It  came in the mail, and was golden rod yellow. I bought dye, and dyed it too dark.

It ended up being more work than I'd like, but at least I got to watch Man in the High Castle, while I put the toothpicks in.

This is how it turned out:

Two students were cacti, so we grouped up together to get a few shots:

A detail you didn't see! My nails:

I hardly do my nails! I just use my hands too much.

Lucky for me I didn't get poked too much. It was impossible to lean back in a chair though. The first green makeup wouldn't cover me, and the second was almost too strong. I'm not the best with makeup! I rarely wear any daily, let alone Halloween.

I get to go home, wash my face, and dress Isaak up to be the girl he wanted to be. Travis said, "I just don't know how to get him ready!" Ha!

Mica's now too old for Trick or Treating. We'll hang back to deliver candy.

What's your favorite costume that you or your child has been?

What's your favorite candy?

WW: Captured {Linky}

I think I'm finally done with this piece. It's title is, "Captured". I showed it once before, but it wasn't finished then.

Mediums: Fabric and Ribbon (Dress), Thread (Bird, Hair, Strings on the Clock, Necklace, and on her Sleeves), Acrylic Paint, Glue (Floor, Molding and Hoop Skirt), Transfer Technique (Wall), and 1/2 Pearl (Necklace), and Toothpicks (Cuckoo Clock).

Backside: I'll be sure to coat that with glue.

I have to ask: Do you like her ghost like, where you can see the background through her, or more opaque? I like the background peeking through. To me it unifies the image more. A coworker stands with me. It brings one thing into another. My husband wishes it wasn't see through. He's like, "What is she a ghost, or something?" Opinions are helpful.

Backside: I'll be sure to coat that with glue.

Crush

A 6th grade girl has a crush on Mica, who is in 4th grade.

He came home one day and said, "Mom something strange happened at school today."

I asked, "What was it?"

He said, "A 6th grader invited me over to eat lunch."

I said, "Did you go?"

He said, "Ya...but it was odd because I remember when I was in 2nd grade she stole money out of my teacher's jar."

I said, "Ya that is odd."

A few days later Mica told me this same girl has been giving him small toys.

I said, "Let me see them. Did you ask her where she got them?"

He said, "She didn't steal them Mom. At least she said she didn't. I think her giving me toys is a little much! I'm really glad she's going to middle school next year. People are starting to say things."

I asked, "What do you say when people say things about her liking you?"

He said, "I just ignore them. I run off and play. Usually it's during recess."

It sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders.

I was going to say something to his teacher when I was up there to read to the class on April Fool's Day. Things were hectic. I'll say something if it gets out of hand.

Do you remember your first crush? I liked this kid Matt that had heart problems. He was so little. I felt bad for him because he had to stay in for recess. I talked to him a lot because we were in a special help group for kids that struggled with academics. I would have never had the guts to tell him I liked him, nor would I give him small toys.
