Drama Camp

Last week Mica and Isaak both went to drama camp.

We knew Mica would be just fine. Isaak on the other hand, we were certain that he would be nervous being dropped off some place new.

One of my friends' twins were happened to be in Isaak's class. That was fun to hear. Except he didn't remember them at all. We must get together more!

I wasn't sure what they would do in drama camp.

Mica was all excited after the first day. He was given a tour of the facility where they have actual musicals and plays. He kept talking about all the costumes. For a boy Mica still really likes to dress up. He has a dress-up bin; that Isaak and him share. It's not full of girly things. They have a super hero capes, a magician robe, doctor's scrubs, a safari outfit and gear, viking hats, and Halloween costumes they still wear.

Mica's Drama Camp

They re-enacted parts of the Lion King. Mica was an elephant. He could do whatever he wanted to do to pretend to be an elephant.

The learned the song Morning Report. He also learned a few other songs. One is a song from The Wizard of Oz. Mica was super excited that he's going to be a tin man and a tornado in that song.

Isaak's Drama Camp

He made a candle and they acted out Jack Be Nimble and other nursery rhymes.

I kept messing with him and said,

"Oh ya this is how it goes,
Jack be nimble
Jack be quick
Jack jumped over the candle stick
and broke his head."

Isaak was like, "He didn't break his head!"

I said, "He didn't? I must have gotten that wrong."

I should have sent Isaak in his Little Jack Horner outfit he wore at preschool. That would have worked.

Anyhow drama camp was a success. They really liked it. I'm glad we signed them up for it.

I'll follow up with pictures and/or video. They did a few productions for us last Friday.

Lion King on Broadway

The boys were so excited about going to Lion King on Broadway yesterday!

The excitement was so much that Isaak didn't take a nap. I tried putting him to bed early the night before; that didn't happen either. He had to go potty and shout out the details from the bathroom. It ended with us saying, "Isaak that's enough! Just go potty and get to bed!" Needless to say he was tired before the show started. It was a 7:30 show. When he lacks on sleep at home I put him down at 7. The latest he goes to sleep is 8:30.

When Isaak is tired he does what Mica used to do; act crazy! This is how Isaak hugs Mica, it's more of a tackle. Boys!

This is on the overpass:

This is in the elevator. Isaak was so excited to have his own ticket:

It all worked out like should have. The boys got to sit on the end of the aisle with their cousins; that are their ages. They were close to the animals that came down the aisles.

Here's the Orpheum theater. It's not my photo. I tried manual, flash and automatic, but the lighting was so dark! I was unsuccessful inside the theater. Of course when the show is going, no cameras can be used. The Orpheum is a really beautiful building!

The show was great. I kept looking over at Mica. He was on the edge of his seat, with a HUGE smile on his face, he kept tapping Cousin Evan, pointing, and laughing. Isaak and Cousin Elijah enjoyed it to, but they looked SO sleepy on top of their enjoyment.

Mica liked the young Simba best. We all agreed that the Rafiki was so funny and had a great voice! The best and hardest puppets to master had to be the elephant and giraffes. The bicycle with the Gazells was so intricate! The only mishap was that the sun in the end got hung up. It looked like it worked like mini blinds do. Part of it went up, another part didn't.

At intermission the first thing Isaak asked me was, "Mom is Simba's Dad really dead, or was he pretending? Because he wasn't moving." He kind of looked concerned. I said, "Isaak Simba's Dad did die, but Simba will learn that his memories with his Dad are locked inside him." Hopefully I answered that one right.

The boys sat through the whole show, fully awake.

They both fell asleep in the car. Isaak looked like he had a hangover this morning. Grandma said, "Just bring him in his pjs in the morning with some clothes and we will feed him breakfast." He never slept in pjs last night. I ripped sleepy boy's clothes off and he slept boy style in his underwear; under the covers. Daddy got him dressed. I drove him and his muffin to Grandma and Grandpa's. Mica slept in as much as possible. I'm hoping he's ok in school today. It is just one day after all.

I think staying up was well worth it!

Guess Where We Are Going Tonight?

Tonight we're going to Lion King on Broadway. I've been before. The kids haven't though. I know they will love it. I just think the costumes are amazing!

Watch out Friday though. I hope Mica doesn't fall asleep in class.

Julie Taymor is one of my favorite directors. She is truly artistic. She went to Indonesia to study their African culture. When she first took on directing Lion King, she wanted to incorporate many types of puppetry in it. She also was a part of making some of the masks for the musical. She's also directed Across the Universe, Frida (I so wish Salma Hayek won an award for that one!), Phantom of the Opera (I've never seen) and Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark on Broadway. Spider-Man I've heard has had many stunt accidents! It still has great reviews.

I wanted to make t-shirts for the boys to wear to Lion King. I kind of procrastinated a bit. I guess life got in the way. I wasn't expecting to be at my sister's house for Elijah's friend birthday party. That's when I planned on working on the t-shirts. She asked me to watch Emerson. Of course I couldn't say, "No!" I wanted to watch him. Plus it stinks that my go to place to buy fabric paint and t-shirts, Hobby Lobby right by my house and work closed! What's moving in? Walmart. I keep saying, "NO!" I had to venture out to Michaels, which is much farther away. They have way less check out people to!

I drew out 4 designs. One looked too much like the original Lion King image for the broadway show, and too Egyptian like. I kept telling myself, "Think African!" I did like the cubistic quality though! I wanted my own style though!

The next one looked too much like the lion in the Wizard of Oz.

The next two I liked, but fellow artist friends told me that they looked too itty bitty kid like. They were the most unique though.

Everyone liked the 1st design best. I had to use it, but tweek it; to be my design more!

Mica picked out yellow shirts. Usually I'm not a yellow person, but in this case the color worked really well! The crown has rivets on the top. They do make gold fabric paint; I used for the crown!

The boys weren't exactly excellent models this morning. I wish they could have gone with no long sleeve shirt underneath. It's kind of cold this morning though!

Have you been to any broadway productions?

Lion King

  • We found this little lion in a suit case that we use to go out of town. We don't go out of town often at all, so it was like a new toy for Isaak.
  • He's been carrying it around and calling it, "Lion King." He's so cute!
