WW: Uncle Tom's Cabin {Linky}

My husband's family came from Germany to Hermann, Missouri. It's a town that's known for their grapes. There are tons of wineries. They also have a lot of antique shops. We went on a tour through some of their most historical houses.

You can't touch the walls on the tour because they are painted with a milk based paint. The paint gets spotted up easily. There is no touch up; the whole wall has to be repainted. You can imagine it was hard being my little boys during the tour. They did pretty well though.

When the German's moved their they were surrounded by other towns that were pro slavery. The German's were not. They were free thinkers that didn't typically believe in organized religion, but were super nice!

They farmed every inch of their land, grew their own flax for making fabric because they didn't want to buy cotton (promoting slaves).

 They were poor, but became wealthy when they learned that grapes grew well there.

They secretly printed Uncle Tom's Cabin in the Strehly House.

Fruit Turkeys

The week of Halloween was swamped! Swamped at home and swamped at work!

We started the week out by going to the Y for family fitness. That night we didn't run around and play games. Instead we made turkeys out of part of an apple, wooden skewer sticks, and grapes of all kinds. For the eyes we used and frosting and sprinkles. For the gobbler we used 1/2 a grape and a tooth pick.

Since I always put pictures up of the boys I'm going to switch gears and put one up of me for a change. Here's my turkey:

It was fun. Mica really got into it. Daddy really got into it. Isaak decided to only use green grapes on one side and his turkey kept loosing balance. Isaak also got frustrated that we couldn't read his mind to help him. So maybe this craft is good for 1st graders and up. We all enjoyed it though.

Here's Mica working away on his. He always has his tongue hanging out when he's working on something. :P

Olives or Grapes?

  • Daddy got our salads ready to eat last night. He put kalamata olives on ours.
  • He got the boys some salad and then some grapes. He put one kalamata olive in with their grapes to get a reaction.
  • Both boys love grapes and they eat salad pretty well to. We didn't think they'd like their one kalamata olive.
  • Mica was first. He was gobbling his grapes up, and wham got the kalamata olive in his mouth. He had a disgusted look on his face and said, "Man I thought this was a grape. I didn't ask for an olive!"
  • Isaak was next. We were all watching him, knowing what was about to happen. He slipped the olive that looked like a grape into his mouth. Right away he had a look of disgust, and spit out the chunks of a half eaten olive.
  • I'm usually the prankster, so it sort of surprised me that Daddy pulled this prank.
