#diy #dandelion #salve

About 6 weeks ago I picked Dandelions like crazy! I knew every part of them could be devoured or used in some way, but had to look up how to use them.

-The flowers can be used in muffins, cakes, and other bread products.

-The roots can be used for teas.

-They can be used to make jellies, jams and syrups.

-The flowers can be used for making salve.

What you Need to Make Infused Dandelion Oil and Dandelion Salve:
  • 4 Cups Dandelion Flowers
  • A Colander
  • A Full Body Towel
  • 16 Ounces of Olive Oil
  • 2 Ounces of Coconut Oil
  • 2 Ounces of Bees Wax
  • 15 Drops of Essential Oil (Whatever Scent You Like)
  • 1 Large Mason Jar
  • 1 Medium Bowl, or 4 Cup Measurer
  • 1 Medium Pot, or Double Boiler
  • 1 or 2 Containers With Lids for the Salve
  • Small Wire Mesh
Time to Make Infused Dandelion Oil

Pick, Pick, Pick:

Start out by picking 4 cups of Dandelion flowers.

Wash them, and get the water out as much as you can. I used a colander.

Dry them on a flat body towel, for 2 to 3 days. They will look what I call "tired" by the 3rd day.

Place them in a large mason jar, and pour 16 ounces of Olive Oil on top.

I used this Olive Oil, but you can use any for this. It's for a salve, so it's not consumed.

Stick a lid on it, and set it out of the sun for 5 to 6 weeks. I wasn't in a hurry, so I did this slower method.

Faster Method:

Heat up a small amount of water in a pot, and put the jar of mostly dried Dandelion flowers with the Olive Oil inside the pan. You'll heat the pot to medium. Turn the heat off, once the water is heated up - not boiling. Let the water cool! Set the jar out of the sun for a week or 2.

This is What it Looks Like After it's had Infusion Time:

Strain:

I used a 4 cup measurer, but you can use a bowl for this next part. Put a wire mesh on top, and pour your infused Dandelion Oil into it. You will need to push it down with the back of a spoon, or your fingers. It will be sludgy. If you are using your fingers, it will get messy. Put the sledge in the compost, or in your trash.

The Infused Oil is Actually Pretty:

Time to Make Dandelion Salve

Heat Things Up:

I used a double boiler, but you can you just a medium pot if you don't have a double boiler. Put a small amount water in the medium pot, or the bottom pot if you are using a double boiler. Turn the heat on to medium.

Add a smaller pot the fits inside the medium pot if you're not using a double boiler.

Add 2 ounces of Coconut Oil to the smaller pot, or top of the double boiler. Melt it all the way. Then add 2 ounces of Beeswax. Stir it until it's melted.

Stir:

It will start to look funky during this process. You haven't done anything wrong. Just keep stirring, and let it melt. It reminded me looks wise like Egg Drop Soup. Don't drink it. Ha!

You are waiting for it to melt down. Not to boil.

Add the 10 to 15 Drops of Essential Oils:

I put in 10 of Peppermint Oil, and 5 of Lavender Oil. Stir it some more.

Time to Dump it:

I used a small, wide mason jar. You want something you can get your fingers in. I had more, so I also used a travel size plastic container that once had a Grape Fruit Body Scrub in it.

Let it be!

It will set up. I went to the store, came back it it was set up.

Put lids on them, and you are done!

Travis has been working hard outside, so I gave him a back message with this salve. It worked great!  You can also use it for your hands, legs, feet. It both moisturizes and gets in those sore muscles.

We have enough to last awhile. If we go on any trips, we have a travel sized container to take with us.

#diy Grapefruit Body Scrub

Isaak takes f.o.r.e.v.e.r to eat and take showers.

Early last week I noticed that my body scrub was being used a lot, by someone. I wondered who was using it? I knew Isaak was using it! He had a guilty smile on his face when I brought it up.

Later in the week it was gone.

I said, "Ok if you're going to use my body scrub, you're going to learn how to make some."

I looked up a few recipes, to base mine off of.

Grapefruit Body Scrub by on Scribd

How to Make if You Don't Want to Read the Instructions Above:

Every body scrub I've made has been easy to make. This one is no exception.

Citrus Pulp/Peeling:

I've been on this kick to dry out orange, lemon, lime and grapefruit pulp/skin. So far I've used the ground up pulp to: 1. Add to loose leaf tea. Just add a bit, or it gets bitter. 2. Add to protein powder, for smoothies. 3. Add to white sugar. Then when I make things like muffins, scones, waffles and pancakes I'm using less white sugar, and some pulp/skin of a citrus fruit for a natural sweetness.

How to Dry Out Citrus Peeling and/or Pulp:

Wash the skin, set it in a bowl by the window to dry out. If you're in the kitchen you can set the peeling/pulp in a sprayed pan, set your oven to 250 or 300 degrees and bake it. That will speed up the drying time.

Cut it in chunks, and grind it up in a food processor. If you want a fine grind, run it through a coffee grinder. With the body scrub you only need to partially dry it, and grind it up with a food processor.

Instructions and Directions to Make the Body Scrub:

It's so easy Isaak could do it!

Get out a medium mixing bowl.

Add in 1/2 cup sugar, 1 cup grapefruit or other citrus fruit grounded peel/pulp, 1/4 cup melted coconut oil, 1/2 cup melted shea butter, and 10 drops of grapefruit essential oil or other citrus fruit essential oils.

*Note: You can add more sugar if you need it more scrub like.

Mix, and pour into a few small mason jars, or containers you have laying around that are not being used.

That's it!

I'm on a Grapefruit Fix, and Isaak Loves Grapefruit too:

I thought the mix would only fill up one container, but it filled up two! Thank goodness I had two empty containers. Make sure you have lids. I've noticed that some scrubs don't do well if water gets to them.

Benefits of Body Scrubs:

It helps remove the dead skin cells with exfoliation. This scrub is a mild body scrub that moisturizes as it allows for absorption into the skin. Certainly it helps keep skin healthy.

Why Citrus Pulp/Peel:

Citrus peels are packed with immune-boosting vitamin C, bone-building calcium and anti-inflammatory, antioxidant bioflavonoids. They also provide potassium, which helps keep blood pressure in check, and limonene, a phytochemical that may have anti-cancer effects and can help with heart burn.

What I love the most is that the ground pulp/peel replaces the fine plastic used in some commercial scrubs.

Why Coconut Oil:

Coconut oil may be linked to some potential benefits for skin, including reducing inflammation, keeping skin moisturized and helping heal wounds. The medium-chain fatty acids found in coconut oil also possess antimicrobial properties that can help treat acne and protect the skin from harmful bacterial such as staph infections and eczema.

Just a Note: In the Philippines they use coconut oil a lot. In their cooking, and on their skin. They have less inflammatory diseases, and less skin conditions than we do in the US.

Why Shea Butter:

Shea butter also contains healthy fatty acids. ... There is a high level of cinnamic acid which makes Shea butter a natural sunscreen. Shea butter has anti-inflammatory properties that make it useful in treating arthritis. Shea butter has powerful moisturizing, anti-aging, protecting and healing benefits to the skin.

Just a Note: It's best to not use a ton of Shea Butter. It can clog up the pores in your skin. That's why I partner it up with other things. For the most part it's great for you. If you have a lot of acne you may want to replace the shea butter with coconut oil. You'd just use a lot of coconut oil.

Follow Up:

Isaak took another shower. I told him to make it quick because he just had one the night before. I just wanted the pollen out of his hair, and for him to clean up a bit because he had a soccer game. He took awhile again. He yelled out, "Mom I know you told me to be quick. I just had to try out our body scrub. It smells and works great!" I guess I can't blame him, for wanting to try something we made.

Do you use a body scrub? Have you ever made your own?

Natural Lip Balm Review

I have a nervous problem: I bite my lip. That's right...I don't bite my fingernails, smoke, or drink. Instead I bite my lip. Me being a lip biter under stress, and dry winter air I tend to get dry, cracked lips.

So far it's not too bad this year. I have the stress. Stress could be a post in its self. The good thing is that I had this sinus surgery before. Now I'm not just a mouth breather.

Meet Natural Lip Balm:

It's felt like I have had it on all day, and I've only applied it once. I've even had a meal in the middle of the day.

Ingredients:

Coconut Oil and Shea Butter

It's so wonderful that it's packed with goodness, and not fillers.

Scents:

Natural is what I got to review
Coconut Oil
Coffee
Mint
Beeswax

They sell them in packs of 3 for $9.99, but also give you the option to mix up the scents for the same price. I was thinking the cost was expensive at first. That's before I realized it's a set of 3. My goodness what's in it is great for your lips.

Where to Get It:

You can get it on The Healing Tree's website: https://healingtreeclub.com/bath-body/natural-lip-balm. It's from Thailand.

One thing to keep in mind about Fractionated Coconut Oil:

Fractionated coconut oil is a fraction of the whole oil: Certain components of the oil are separated or removed from the oil for a particular use. Different uses of fractionated coconut oil include industrial, medical applications and beauty products. However, it is not the complete, virgin coconut oil.

I do like that it's a carrier for essential oils. I wish it had more of the whole oil in it.
