Use Adjectives to Craft Season Shapes!

Do you have a craft lover like I do? Isaak simply loves crafts. The trouble is, is that many crafts are geared more towards girls. There needs to be more of a market towards boys when it comes to crafts.

Often times Isaak makes up his own craft projects. Recently he made a yoyo out of an empty ribbon spool. I didn't think it would work out very well, but he was excited to give it a try. That's not his first attempt at something that didn't quite work out. He made a paper kite once that he swore would take off.

I love his imagination, and heart all his paper projects.

I have a new craft idea to share that can be used for boys and girls.

Use Adjectives to Craft Season Shapes!

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… If your child is interested in the four seasons, try this fun activity that mixes writing and art! Two of Isaak's favorite things!

Cut out and decorate shapes that represent each season, then use adjectives to describe them. This is best for second graders because they've learned about different seasons, have the beginning skills to write, and the motor skills to cut.

This craft is a fun way to practice writing paragraphs.

For decoration, you can hang all four seasons at once, or put one season up at a time.

What You Need:

  • Pad of white paper
  • Pen or pencil
  • Different colors of construction or scrapbook paper to fit the different seasons (in this case they used yellow, brown, red and white)
  • Safety Scissors
  • Glue or Glue Sticks
  • Markers or Sharpies
  • Cotton balls (optional)
  • A Hole punch
  • Yarn or String
Directions:

Ask your child to describe the different characteristics of each season. What kind of changes would you notice in the weather?

Examples: Leaves falling off trees, pumpkins growing, flowers sprouting, grass turning green, snow and snowflakes coming down, and so on.

Hand your child the pad of paper and a pen and have her write down 10 adjectives to describe each season. You could make this a 10 day project. Focus on one season per day. You could even provide a snack for each day to go with each season: Spring - Mango Orange Smoothie, Summer - a S'more, Fall - Pumpkin Pie, Winter - Snowman Sugar Cookies just to give you some examples.

If you follow along with the example shown above: Begin with the piece of red construction paper. Use a pencil to lightly trace a flower shape onto the paper; the shape should be large enough for your child to write a paragraph on one side. Use the yellow paper to cut out a sun shape for Summer, the brown paper to cut out a leaf shape for Fall, and the white paper to cut out a snowman for Winter.

Cut the shapes out of the paper.

On each shape, decorate one side with the markers.

On the other side, invite your child to describe the season in a short paragraph using the adjectives she brainstormed earlier. Encourage her to mention what the season looks like, what it feels like, what she does in those months, what she likes and dislikes about each season, and to add in any of the holidays in the seasons.

Punch a hole in the top of each season shape.

Tie a piece of yarn or string through each hole, and then hang them around the house for the whole family to enjoy!

What Do You Get Out of This Activity:

  • It's a great activity for both boys and girls
  • You're building memories with your child, or grandchild
  • They are practicing what they've learned in school
  • They are using their fine motor and writing skills
  • It's a fun decoration to hang in the house
What's your favorite season? Mine is summer. I love the heat - most of the time. My birthday is the first day of summer, so it's my season of joy. I also enjoy that so many fruits and veggies are in the stores during the summer.

Rock N Learn Early Childhood Book Collection #Giveaway #BackToSchool

Disclaimer: This is a sponsored post. I received the books mentioned in exchange for this review. All opinions are mine.

I love books and movies that are educational. Rock N Learn has a great collection for kids all through elementary. Mica likes their multiplication DVD, and Isaak learned so much from their DVD on sight words. The company focuses on learning.

Rock N Learn sent me 2 board books to review. I love board books for kids because they last so much longer. Both books are 30 pages, which I think is a perfect length. They are for ages 1 and up. They are going to be gifts for my nephews for Christmas, but in the meantime Isaak has read them. I even spotted Mica picking them up for a quick read.

Animals - Point & Name With 44 Rhymes

This book brings the reader in with its pretty pictures of animals. There are 44 creatures from the forest, farm, and other animals around the world.

There are fun rhymes throughout the book.

Isaak read this a few times because he loves the pictures.

Letter Sounds Silly Sentences - Early Phonics Skills

This book helps with learning how to read in a fun way. It builds pre-literacy skills. There are 26 letters in the book, and silly sentences that help with learning to read.

Isaak said, "Hey I know these characters!" He saw the characters in the videos that we have. He was intrigued with the book right away.

The Polly Porcupine page cracked the boys up!

Klikko Vehicles - Educational Building Set With Activities to Learn Math Review

Klikko Vehicles is an Educational Building Toy (137 pieces) with Activities to Learn Math / STEM Concepts.

It comes the tray and bag (pictured above) to keep the pieces off the floor, although Mica had the pieces everywhere. He puts his building toys all over. That's no fault of the toy.

The boys were off school on Thursday, and I was off work from Strep Throat. We relaxed a lot. Mica (the well one) said, "I'm bored!" I got our Kilkko Vehicles, and put him in charge of building some vehicles. I told him I just needed a few built, but he was all about it. He built 3, and said afterwards, "Wow that bulldozer looks fun to build to."

The ship was his first construction. He had a little trouble with the tips. The pieces are more wobbly than Legos, snap together, and are harder to come apart. I took them apart. I thought at first I'd possibly break them. No chance of that happening. The pieces are sturdy enough to not break!

He built the rocket second. That one was my favorite!

Mica said, "Look Mom with this one it will help Isaak and I with fractions."

The last one he put together was the subway. I thought it was a submarine. I guess it would be played with either way.

Mica said the little yellow piece in the tip was hard to put in. This was Mica's favorite to build.

With the Subway it helps the child learn multiplication.

This set would make a great gift. Isaak's getting it for his birthday. Mica (age 10) thinks Isaak (age 7) will need a little assistant with an adult or his brother.

I love that it helps with early engineering/math + promotes patial and fine motor skills. There are 137 colorful geometric pieces that snap together, and pivot

Colors:
  • Red
  • Yellow
  • Blue
  • Green
  • Black
Things that can be learned:
  • Multiplication
  • Fractions
  • Tangram Logic Puzzles
  • Area
  • Following Instructions
Things that can be built:
  • Jeep
  • Car
  • Rocket
  • Ship
  • Bulldozer
  • Subway

I really like this set. It's something a little different. I love that there is learning involved.

What kind of vehicle would you like see added to this set? I think I'd pick a jet.

Whistlefritz, French for Kids {DVD Review}

One thing that my kids do not have in school is a foreign language. I know learning languages is best when kids are younger. In other countries it's common for them to know more than one language. Here in the US we're lucky if we know our own language. I'm trying to help our kids learn Spanish and French.

I have the wonderful opportunity to introduce to you the award winning Whistlefritz's new DVD. It's called: French for Kids: Dedans et Dehors (Inside and Out).

It's for ages 2 to 7. I tell you our 8 year old Mica is glued to the TV when it's on. He likes Whistlefritz! Mica likes it just as much as Isaak, who is 5 years old. We have one of their Spanish DVDs to. We got the Spanish one when Mica was about Isaak's age.

This is Mica's drawn version of Fritzi when he was 5 years old.

I can understand why they like it so much. Their company has won 49 awards! It's used in schools and purchased by many homeschool families.

A few things that their DVDs include:
  • Cool Actions
  • Animation
  • Lively Music
  • Tons of Fun
About French for Kids: Dedans et Dehors (Inside and Out)

Fritzi’s in the house!  But où est Fritzi?

Finding the mischievous mouse Fritzi is just part of the fun in this lively language learning program from Whistlefritz, the award-winning producers of the Spanish for Kids series of DVDs and CDs.

This French immersion DVD welcomes you to Fritzi’s house, where up or down, inside or out, there is lots to learn and plenty to do.

It allows kids to explore every area of Fritzi’s house, from la chambre (the bedroom) and la salle de bain (the bathroom) to le salon (the living room) and la cuisine (the kitchen).

It's an engaging interactive format teaches children basic greetings, positional words, food, daily activities, numbers, and more.  But that’s not all! Nous allons chanter et danser!  (We’re going to sing and dance!)

This DVD will have children on their feet dancing along to upbeat rhythms.  Dedans et Dehors is an engaging blend of colorful backgrounds, charming animation and live-action that kids will want to revisit again and again.

This DVD includes an easy-to-use translation guide for parents and teachers, who are first time learners of French, as well as French subtitles.

Designed for children ages 2-7, Dedans et Dehors is fun for all ages!

Like Whistlefritz on Facebook.

Mica and Isaak liked this DVD just as much, if not better than the Spanish one we already have. I'm glad we have something educational to pop in when we're busy making meals. That seems to be a good time to have them watch their movies.
