Sing, Sing a Song Saturday

Sing, Sing a Song Saturday is all about me discovering something that is different. I don't want to post things that you and I have more than likely heard before. I want to find something different. It could be from another country, someone singing from the streets of NY, and more.

Last week I was introduced to an instrument that I have never seen before called a Hammered Dulcimer over at Golch Central's Rambling Stuff.

The artist I'm featuring this week is Jamie Janover. He plays the Hammered Dulcimer by himself and with other bands.

He layers sounds together using the Hamered Dulcimer, mini drum kit, and adds technology. He started as a drummer. Much of his music is approached by thinking of rhythm first. Then he adds different sounds on top of that.

He's played in the US, Africa and Canada.

Sing, Sing a Song Saturday

I started doing what I call Sing, Sing a Song Saturday.  I'm going to post one song on Saturdays that the boys or I like.

The song may be part of a movie, a kid's video or just a song we like. I'll try and include why we like it and/or the history of the song/singer.

I discovered the wonderful singer named Amos Lee. Have you heard of him? His voice just makes me want to melt. He just has a beautiful voice!

He's an American singer-songwriter whose musical style has folk, rock and soul influences. He was born in Philadelphia and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in English. He started out working as a schoolteacher and bartender. After that he began to pursue a career in music.

He has recorded five albums and toured opening acts for all kinds of very well known people such as: Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Van Morrison, Dave Mathews Band, Adele, and more.

Every live song I heard of his was just as good as the recorded stuff. That's a true artist for you.

I thought of Isaak when I saw this next video. He's always making something, then making something out of that something he made the first time. He likes to make pretend fires outside to. I'm going to show the video before I talk about the band:

Catch the Light

The band is called Sin Fang. They are an experimental, Icelandic Indie Pop with beautiful folk in the mix.

Sin Fang is the solo project of Sindri Már Sigfússon, the founder of Iceland’s Indie outfit Seabear. I talked about Seabear in the fall on this blog. Ironically Seabear also started as a single member project later developing into a 7 piece band.

Looping is what this next artist is about. She, and I want to stress she because a lot of people in her comments called her and he, sets up many loops and proceeds to sing to them. The band is called tUne-yArDs.

Do you know what make me mad as hell? When people get bullied online and/or real life. Merrill Garbus from tUne-yArDs had labels fighting over her because of her unique sound. What happened? She gets made fun of because of the way she looks in YouTube comments. I simply love her soulful voice and how she changes her outfit to match what she's singing about.

She Possesses an expansive sound that marries a coarse folk with the bold pop sensibility of an R&B, African influences, and a lot of DIY aesthetic.

This song is called Powa. It contains two loops going on to start the song out.

This is a tiny desk concert put on by by the support of: NPR.

 This song is called Bizness.

We have a station here that plays newish music. I was listening to it yesterday. One song came on that I liked. I'm not sure if it's a well known song or not. I have never heard of it. The bands name is Of Monsters and Men.

I just love bands that play a variety of instruments. I also love different sounding voices. This band has both!

Of Monsters and Men are a band of day dreamers who craft, folk, pop songs.

Nanna, who began as the acoustic act Songbird, recruited extra hands to bolster her sound for a solo show. She liked how her vocals commingled with Raggi’s, so they started writing songs together and in 2010 morphed into Of Monsters and Men.  Some occasions, they cut out animal masks for the audience to wear, making them makeshift monster-men/women. “Iceland can be a very isolated country and that translates to the music," Nanna says, adding,"We get stuck in our little world".

A new band I discovered just this week is called Mumford and Sons

It's nice to the ears. They are an English folk rock band. They've been featured on Saturday Night Live. The biggest news is that they have agreed to pair up with Emmy Lou Harris for a concert. I saw her when I lived in Savannah, Georgia. She is wonderful!

I'm a music flipper, kind of like the man that won't leave the remote alone. Although Daddy isn't like that. One day I was flipping though stations trying to find something to listen to. Something that was different. I'd rather listen to the Mexican channel over rap, churchy stations or hip hop. Maybe I'm a music snob. I just get sick of the same old stuff. I want to hear something different sometimes. I hit a station that had folk music playing and Mica said, "Let's listen to this Mom." I totally agreed.

I love listening to music on the radio when it's the weekend. There is one station here that plays different things during that time. Last week it was blues, then one other week it was folk and another time it was bluegrass.

The trouble is, is I forget names easily. Especially when I'm not visually seeing someone. To find the singer Julie Fowlis I just typed in Folk and listened until I heard something I wanted to feature. She's so pretty and sings in English and Gaelic.

Oh and what a pretty version of the Beatles Black Birds!

Does she sound familiar? She does a lot of the music for the movie Brave.
