@stemlabkids Bertie the Balance Bot Review

I really like toys that kids can build themselves. Recently Isaak got Bertie the Balance Bot from STEM Lab Kids to review.

I was thinking he'd want help building Bertie. NOPE! Isaak wanted to build Bertie the Balance Bot himself. I sat back, watched, and took pictures between each step.

It took about an hour for the bot to be built. It was a good afternoon. Isaak didn't get too frustrated. He did make a mistake, but it was way at the end. All was good.

Parts:

There weren't a lot of parts.
  • Wooden pieces that were pre die cut
  • Plastic pieces
  • Screws - the set included extras if needed
  • A battery holder
  • Batteries
  • A mini screwdriver
  • Stickers
  • A manual
  • A file - I'm assuming was for the wooden pieces if needed

Isaak got right to work!

The manual wasn't too hard to figure out. He only struggled with two areas. Considering this toy was made in China, I was wondering if the instructions would be hard to follow. They weren't.

The wheels were first on the list to be built. Popping them out of their wooden background makes Isaak uneasy. He feels like he's going to break them. I suggested he use a kitchen knife to help him push the pieces out. Of course you wouldn't want to make this suggestion, for any kid younger than Isaak. I was watching him the whole time.

Isaak liked that the instructions had visual photos, along with text. He's an artsy kid, so visuals help.

Step 1:

Sometimes Isaak and I take things a bit to literal. One of the first instructions was to insert the axle into the pulley. They mentioned to use a wooden piece to help push it in. In the visual they show a wooden piece pushing the axle. Isaak was looking for that exact wooden piece, but the piece didn't exist. It was just to assist with pushing the axle in. I suggested to Isaak he go use his hammer he had from Lowes Clinic. He got that, and tapped the axle into place.

Step 2:

Isaak got to put the battery holder in.

The Middle Steps:

Forming the box wasn't too hard. Isaak didn't need any help.

Finishing the last cube like panel was hard, for Isaak. He got it.

Finishing it up:

I always panic inside when kids get to this point. Like will it work? Did he do this all for nothing? I knew this was for a review, so it could have totally flopped.

Isaak messed up with the batteries. That's something I've done countless times. What can I say? He's my son. We were both thinking it was not going to work. I suggested he put the batteries in the other way. Boom it worked.

Finishing Touches:

Isaak used the stickers to decorate Bertie. You could go as far as painting the bot if you wanted to.

Positives:
  • It encourages STEM Learning = Science | Technology | Engineering | Math
  • There's problem solving skills that occur with this toy
  • Kids make Bertie the Balance Bot themselves
Negatives:
  • They left out "A" in STEM to be STEAM - A = Art - Bertie uses art with the stickers and kids designing it themselves - Being a former art instructor this is important to me
  • The batteries are not the best brand
  • The toy its self was made in China
Overall I think it's fun to watch kids process through something. It was like watching Isaak's brain wheels move right along with Bertie's actual wheels.

Disclaimer: I got this product for free in exchange for an honest review.

Robot Love

Isaak was really excited about this robot t-shirt. I bought it for Valentines day at Gymboree. The robot's chest opens up and says, "4u".

I ordered Mica his shirt online in the store. If you order online, while in their store, they don't charge you shipping and handling. The one I ordered for Mica, doesn't open up, but it's still cute. When they get older their clothes just are not as neat/cute.

Lunch Anyone?

  • Go Graham Go has a fun giveaway going on right now. It's to win a Packit lunch bag.
  • This lunch bag is cool! Cool in style and the fact that it is an icepack as well.

  • One thing I've noticed with being a parent, whatever my kids are into I'm into as well. Right now both boy's are into robots!
  • A few years ago Mica was into peacocks {odd for a boy, but that's what he liked}. I bought a peacock shirt for myself. I also found a peacock puppet for him. You'll get a chance to meet this puppet and see a peacock drawing that Mica drew for me on my Wordless Wednesday this week. ;)
  • They also liked trains and still do. I've found train shirts that are fun in the past. They have lots of Thomas stuff too.
  • Isaak's into puppies. We've gotten him some puppy things.
  • Now both boy's are into robots. For Easter both boy's are getting some robot things.
  • With Mica starting school in the fall, this robot lunch bag would be a great birthday gift!

Peatoes

  • My Wee View is hosting a giveaway to Peatoes. They are giving away a $50 gift certificate.
  • I've never seen or heard of this store before. When I first stopped in, the prices were a bit high. I did really like some of their toys. These toys were very reasonable in price. They are also something that Mica and Isaak would totally get into!
Mica would love this toy Magnetic Robots by Mudpuppy.

Mica's First Friend Party

  • It was indeed a busy weekend! Mica has his first friend birthday party. We had 10 kids at our house including our own.
  • I didn't take too many photo's. I didn't know which kid's photo's could be put up on the web, and which one's couldn't. Plus I was busy!!!!!!! Two hours go by so fast!
  • Daddy made a HUGE spaceship out of cardboard for the kids to play in. It was hard finding a place that would give up a refrigerator box. Most places crush them right away, or early in the day.
  • Mica rested in this spaceship today.

  • We had chicken quesadillas, green beans and clementines.
  • The boy's gobbled up their food like it was going out of style, and the girl's picked at theirs like little bird's.
  • I made another robot cake.
  • The kid's liked it.

  • We had a Pinata too.
  • The cute little girl's looked mean when pounding the Pinata. It was so funny!
  • Mica got some great gifts!
  • I had a talk with Mica about saying, "Thank you" when you receive a gift. Then at another birthday party he went to, a little girl hugged everyone after she opened her gifts. I reminded Mica about that, and how good that made him feel. I told him that he didn't have to hug everyone if he didn't want to, but he for sure needed to say, "Thank you!"
  • He hugged everyone. The girl's giggled, and the boy's hug ended in a wrestle.
  • For the kid's party bags I made rocket cookies.
  • There was also these fun wind up robots I found at Target for cheep!
  • I also gave the kids a Hello Hanna robot place mat to take home to decorate that I won from Go Graham Go.
  • My only wish is that I would of purchased more of the place mats. It took awhile to figure out how many kids were supposed to come. There was one too many. I just simply forgot to give the first to go a place mat.
  • They are fun!

We had a good time, but I was tired when it was all over!
