Library Volunteer

Mica's continuing to volunteer at the library a few hours a week. He collects zip codes for their Read to a Dog Program.

The teacher in me already had to get after him. We went to pick him up, and he was on his cell phone checking something. I said, "Mica you're at work. No cell phone!" He said, "Mom they don't care." I said, "I do. Get off it!"

Otherwise I think volunteering is good for him!

The boy has already read his Summer Reading hours. I'm making him wait to cash in for prizes until Isaak gets there.

I signed the boys up for a few things through the library.

Babysitting Class:

Mica took a 2nd Babysitting Class. He wasn't too excited about joining in because he took it last year. I said, "You may learn something new. A refresher is good for anyone."

He came out of the class thanking me. He said he did learn a lot. I guess the girl that headed it up was a different person than his other class.
  • He learned different games to play with different ages of kids.
  • They talked about how a lesson is more important than discipline. Example: Instead of taking something away, explain why what a kid did was bad. Then they know not to do it again. That's not to say that they shouldn't be disciplined, but have a lesson first.
  • He learned more First Aid. He's not certified with it, but knows how to deal with certain situations.
Cupcake Decorating Class:

I kind of thought Mica may not want anything to do with cupcake decorating, but Isaak wanted to take the class when I brought it up. They could choose between just frosting and sprinkles, making a rainbow with an Airhead Strip of Candy, or a Sunflower with the center being a small Oreo.

Isaak picked the Sunflower. He was happy to eat it afterwards.

We have a few more classes underway:
  • Didgeridoo for Isaak
  • Teen Movie Night (Possibly)
  • Chess (Possibly)
  • Ukulele Lessons

I say possibly because some we didn't have to sign up for all the classes. It's more like you just show up.

Are you active with your public library?

Tid Bits

  1. I'm busy rewriting a test today (Thursday). I had crossword puzzles in my tests. It takes so long to create an original one of those. Messing around with creating a table in InDesign is something else. At least I'm getting it down, and won't have to do it next year.
  2. Daylight Savings Time is hard to get used to. The boys have gone to bed early this week. they have been cranky in the evenings. I think it's hard on teachers to. Isaaak's teacher told the class that no one got a green (good) dot on Tuesday. He's had nothing but green dots since they started the dot thing a few weeks ago. One can't be perfect all the time.
  3. Daddy has been working hard on putting a sculpture together. His welder has been making one of our circuit breaker's go off. Before we had fuse boxes.
  4. In one of my classes, my students are doing a campaign for a nonprofit organization of their choice. They usually get into it. As a teacher what do you do if a student breaks down crying during their presentation? I stopped her, and told her she could A) Take a break, or B) Try to keep going. I left it up to her. The poor thing tried to keep going. She's doing her non-profit on An Alzheimer's organization. Her Grandma currently has it. My Grandma passed away from it. Emotion was in the air.
  5. My sister is pregnant. It was hard to know how to feel. She has Evan 8, Elijah 5, Emerson (special needs) 2 1/2 and now she's pregnant with a healthy boy. At first I was scared for her, then I was annoyed that she wasn't careful. How is she going to take care of all of them? Now I've gotten past all that. I'll just go with the flow. I'll be an aunt in May. All together I have 5 nephews and only 1 niece.

Summer School

A few weeks ago I was told that I had no summer classes to teach! YAY! It's been years since that has happened.

Then a week ago I was told I had to help someone out with their summer course. With vacations I understand. I'm still not clear as to what helping her means exactly. On Friday she still didn't have things ready at all.

I was told I might need to teach an additional summer course for someone that didn't have a high enough GPA to graduate. The clarity on teaching this additional course didn't happen until this last Thursday morning. I had to ask when it was. Yep I had two days to prepare for a whole course. Granted I have taught it many years now, but every date needed to be changed on every handout. Everything is days instead of weeks. During the school year we have our classes once a week. Now we have the class daily. I wanted to make sure everything was clear.

I to am leaving to go somewhere during this class. I met with the lady who is covering for me on Thursday and Friday.

I had everything ready on Friday. So I thought. Then last night I remembered I forgot to print out the image he has to paint from. I woke up in the middle of the night with stomach issues. This morning was only worse. We are down to one car. I made the call to just come into work. After all I'd just be sitting around all day with one student. Now my stomach hurts, and I feel light headed from not eating much.

Get this I still haven't heard from the lady I'm supposed to cover for. I'm shaking my head.
