Out of the Box Saturday

It's all about me discovering something that is different. I don't want to post things that you and I have more than likely heard before. I want to find something different. I'll cover something sing | songy one week, and artsy | fartsy the next.

I ran across the band Atom™ and Tobias. It's something new that I've never heard of. It's also a different type of music venue that I don't usually listen to. It's electronic. I happen to like their music. I've been listening to it to paint to. It's relaxing. They aren't afraid of doing things new. They constantly are thinking about collaborating, and improvise a lot.

Atom™ and Tobias Freund are both figures within the genre of electronically generated music. Tobias began his career in the early '80s, by then mainly using the pseudonym "Pink Elln", looks back on a long sequence of music making which lead him from mainstream pop via club music, up to the heights of the experimental and unclassifiable. Tobias and Atom™ met around 1986. The pre-techno scene was blooming while both met in a studio. In 1992 they recorded probably one of the very first "techno" live recordings ever, the 12-inch "Elektroniikkaa", which soon became an underground anthem.

Both played at the Labyrinth festival (Japan) in 2011. Tobias and Atom™ sat in a hotel lobby which was equipped with an acoustic- and an electric piano. Almost instinctively they started to improvise while they had a small flash recorder running.

Random Tid Bits

  1. Isaak laid down with me on the couch the other night and said, "Mom you're epic." I'm thinking he got that one from school.

  2. One of my friends on FB saw my paintings, and wants me to paint her daughter a cat for her birthday. The only trouble is...is that she wants it done in an anime style. It's a style I do not get into at all. I'm trying to be open minded. It's extra money, and the style she wants will take less time to do than the stuff I normally work on. She approved my drawing, the cost, so now it's time for me to paint.

  3. I've been getting a project ready for my students. It's one I share most every year. I come up with 2 gigantic posters, cut them up into rectangles, or squares. Each student gets one piece from each poster. They are not told what the images are. They pull out different techniques to work on the images. I took the main photo, and add in things I've found. I still have to finish adding some shadows and stuff. I have a good start on the first image. Now what to do for the second one? Should I make a land of fairies? How about a trip back to the zoo to get photos of flamingos? I could make a world of real flamingos with garden flamingos. Do garden gnomes freak you out?

  4. We're on season 3 of Dexter. I like the guy. So much of me wishes he'd stop killing. My anxiety level goes up every time he kills someone.

  5. The boy were cracking up when I showed them Just for Laughs Gags on YouTube. Travis liked the Cactus Prank the most.

WW: Goof {Linky}

Isaak made himself some cardboard glasses and said, "Mom take a picture of me. I've got style!"

He also decided to put his white t-shirt around his waist to look like a skirt.

The next day we were talking about movies that we've never seen, but would like to. Pan's Labyrinth came up. I showed the boys some pictures from it. Isaak held up his dried fruit to look like a character from the movie.

Isaak also decided to make this paper hat.

Welcome to the Jungle

If you ever come to Omaha, Nebraska, this is by far the hot spot.

Henry Doorly Zoo has been rated number 1 in the world in 2015.

I'm going to share a little section of the zoo each week. Keep in mind that this is just a little piece of the gigantic zoo. Kingdoms of the Night might be hard to share because it's all dark. Maybe a video will do when I get to that.

Welcome to the Lied Jungle. It's my favorite spot. A lot of artists were hired to paint on the walls to make it look as natural as possible. It's America’s largest indoor rainforest. Monkeys, tapirs, macaws and pygmy hippos are just a few of the animals you will see in the Lied Jungle. This exhibit showcases rainforests from South America, Asia and Africa. There's an upper and lower walk view of the rainforests.

This shows more of an overall view of the Jungle:

I love to watch the monkeys.

They have a few draw bridges. My boys wouldn't hold still. This is the best photo I could get of them.

Tapirs are so neat to look at.

What's your favorite animal in the jungle?
