I've been hit hard with spam this week. One older post got hit. I set it to draft. Then my new post got hit. We're talking 1,000s of comments.
My comments are set to moderation + get sent to my email, so I can approve them. There has been a ton of deleting from me. It's so annoying!
To think of how many other things I could have been doing...while deleting spam!
Usually when I'm hit it's a few messages, or 10. 1,000s hasn't really happened until now. As soon as I delete them, more pop up. I'm glad I haven't let them through. I don't really know how to stop it.

I had the same problem. I finally had to enable word verification. That stopped the spam cold. It made some people aggravated and they won't comment anymore, but like you I don't have time to check hundreds of messages daily to see if they are legitimate or spam.
What a pain! I hate spam. Haven't gotten hit with that many though. Geesh!
Oh my that's really a lot!! I get hit every now and then but not as much as that.
I don't send my comments to my emails though - only check on them when I log back onto the blog. Maybe set word verification for a while to stop the spam flow and see if it helps.

I get hit every now and then too. Spam sucks!
I go through phases with spam. Sometimes I get a handful and then other times I get slammed!
Are you taking anonymous comments? Once I turned that off i stopped getting spam.
Oooh no.. I hate spam as well.. It gakes ages to delete them. But filtering it helps alot.. No more anonymous visitors..
I have an old post that gets spammed a LOT...
