Assignments for the Week

I thought I'd share these. I had an assignment this week. More about that later.

I had to do an email blast about a new mobile app!

+ a poster about a new sushi place being in Nashville.

I was given fonts, images, and color swatches to use. I could use my own images with the things given to me, so I added one of my rainy images to the Nashville poster.

Which image do you like better? They did not have to look the same.

WW: Art of the Seating {Linky}

In the summer I went to Art of the Seating: 200 Years of American Design. It was pretty inspiring considering that my husband was making a chair, for a different show.

It's odd going to a chair show, and not being able to sit in any of them.

My favorite:

What chair design was your favorite? Do you like modern, or classic better?

My husband's chair is out of its exhibition, and is now in our living room. It's both good and bad. It looks good, but every time one of the kids walks by it he's like, "Be careful!"

WW: Chair #design #linky

My husband submitted a chair design to be in an architecture firm.

His little model made it.

For a three or four months he worked his butt off on the real thing. I made a lot of meals, and helped Isaak a ton with homework.

He had his show a few weeks ago.

That tiny thing in front of the chair in the 4th picture is his model in the first picture.

Here he is! You can see more of my husband's work here.

Post ANY post you want comment love on! It doesn't have to be wordless or wordful. I like rules sometimes, but they are meant to be broken. Link up a post!

Creating

I have a rule at my house: I don't care if it's messy as long as something is being created when it's messy. Well things have been in the process of being created for a few weeks. I do dishes and sweep, so it's not disgusting. It's just filled with a project here, and another project there.

Travis has been working on testing out projects for his student workshops here at home.

Here's a joint project. Mica bent some wires on a board and put a knee high over it to make a sculpture.

Isaak painted it, and poured some sand in the wet paint. Whatever is laying around, Isaak wants to try. Isaak, "Mom I love crackle. Can I use it?" Me, "Not this time." Isaak, "Why?" Me, "You're sculpture is flat, and has a really great look going on. Stick with it, don't add more things to it." Isaak, "What's retarder? Can I use that?" Me, "No you don't need retarder. It's a medium you can add to your paint, so it dries slower. You want your paint to dry faster."

Travis has many piles of projects going on. One lots of cut colored paper for one of his classes. His 8th graders mad this:

I haven't been painting, but instead designing like crazy. I've been trying to put my illustrations into design projects. It's a lot of work.

I did all these this weekend:

The book took the longest. I still don't know if I'm totally happy with it. For the time being it's done. That's a fake story, and author.

I did find a story online about Native Americans Struggling to Find Housing. It looks better larger.

These are my cookies. I made an ad series called, "Get Cookies Faster".

They've all be uploaded to my art site

Have you created anything lately?

Random Tid Bits

  1. We think Isaak is going through a growth spurt; paired up with growing pains. He ate a ton of food on Wednesday, fell asleep at 7 last night because he was so tired, and woke up 2 or 3 times scared of noises and lights that couldn't be explained. Under his knees hurt really bad.

After the second or third time of him waking up Travis put him on the couch in the living room. Travis has never wanted the boys to cuddle with us in our bed. I'm more the type that wouldn't care in a situation like last night. It is what it is.

  2. I've been hit with a few freelance duties. I made a business card for a past co-worker that now lives in Atlanta. Whenever I make things for friends even though they know they are paying me I hate sending over that final bill. The thought goes through my mind: Maybe they are thinking I'm charging them too much, or what if they expected me to charge them more. It's so silly I do that. You'd think I'd be past that already, but I always think that people just don't understand how long design work takes. I have to mention that I don't ever feel this way when it comes to people that are not friends or family.

Here's how the card turned out. I changed all the information to protect her identity. She wanted a 1 sided business card, with purple as her accent color. That's really all she gave me for what to do. She ended up being super happy with the cards, so that's good. It's a screen shot, so if the type seems hazy, it's not on the card.

  3. My sister has been wanting things done for SOFT, which is a nonprofit that helps with research for people like Emerson, and any other chromosome deficiencies. So far I've just been doing things out of the kindness of my heart. The work is challenging. Up until now they didn't have a logo, but used a rainbow and balloons for the colors of the chromosome problems. Logos should be only a few colors and shouldn't change with each thing that's done. Considering that their look changes all the time, they don't know what they want - it's difficult.

  4. I've been wanting a non-cancerous cyst on my forehead gone for months now. Of course my mind was on bigger things - an upcycled nose. Travis kept saying, "Leave it alone!" Well I can't leave it alone. I don't want it cut out by a dermatologist. They'll squeeze! When I just had surgery I don't need anyone squeezing me. Apple Cider Vinegar it is. Yes my skin will burn from it. I need want it out. Goodness my skin is a mess from that surgery. Dry in some spots, small pimples in others. I can't scrub it because it's all so sensitive.

  5. I go in for an Aspirin Drip at the Allergy and Asthma Clinic next week for 2 to 3 days. I'm so nervous! I'm allergic to it, that's why they are dripping it into me to build up a resistance. Asthma/Allergy sufferers should take Ibuprofen when they have flair ups to help with inflammation. Well I can't because it shuts down my lungs and makes me sneeze a ton. They are expecting a reaction. Fun times!

I accidentally scheduled my ENT follow-up on the last 3rd day of this Aspirin Drip. I don't know if I can go to it, or not. The Aspirin Drip may take only 2 days. I called to see if I should reschedule. They don't know if I should, or not. I'll get an automated call to confirm my appointment that I don't know if I can keep, or not.

At least I get to stare at my cute Asthma/Allergy doctor for a few days.

Out of the Box Saturday

One thing I've always been fascinated with are maps. I like them more for their shapes and details than the directions that they lead. I'm actually horrible with directions. Without my husband I don't think I could get from one state to the next. Once I know my area I pick the most logical route; when my husband picks a route that may take him much longer.

Do you consider maps art?

There's a designer in New York at Pentagram named Paula Scher. She's done designs for Swatch Watch, the New York Theater Company, Citibank and more. She hand paints maps on the side. These painting are really large! It's what's left of craft for her.

All images were gotten here and here.

WW: Puzzle Murals {Linky}

Every year I make 2 gigantic posters, then cut them up into pieces for my students to get 1 piece of the big image. They don't know what the image is at first. They each get two different techniques to create their images as well.

I used images from my last vacation, but edited them to make them more colorful.

Mountain Ewes on top of Pikes Peek:

I did make the bright colored triangles in Photoshop.

This one turned out bad! I was not impressed at all! The main focal point is horrible! :(

Crow in an old window in Mesa Verde. It was on their Balcony Tour:

I did not do the graffiti.

This one turned out great! I was really impressed with this one. It looks better than the original. :) How could 1 turn out so bad, and another so great?

Here's a few close-ups of my favorites:

Impressionism

Collage Paper

Painting on Pumice

Junk (the pink lines are cigarette butts, and the green is broken glass)

Cross-Hatching on Paper

Watercolor

Chalk Pastels
