Rock N Learn DVD #Giveaway
I'm so lucky to get Rock N Learn Multiplication RAP DVD to review. This is a $19.99 value.
I didn't know what to expect. I've reviewed 2 of their Sight Word DVD's before. They were geared towards younger children. Multiplication RAP DVD is for grades 3 and up. It has catchy tunes that make math fun, and easy to learn math facts.
Mica loves reading, but he's been struggling with math. I learned from his teacher that Mica is not alone. His class just got switched to Common Core this year. I think once he gets it, he'll be fine. Any time you introduce something new to the curriculum, it's going to take a bit of an adjustment. His teacher says that Mica actually does really well with math in the classroom, so it's just a matter of getting it down when it comes to his homework.
Mica starts learning multiplication and cursive soon. I jumped at the chance to have Mica watch Multiplication RAP DVD. It does follow the Common Core State State Standards.
Rock N Learn alone has won over 150 awards. I know their videos are a great way to jump start kids with learning. They are wonderful for homeschooling to. Yes we send our kids to school, but we do a lot of learning in our home as well.
What I wasn't expecting is that Isaak - who is 6, would sit in, and listen to the DVD as well. In fact Isaak got out a piece of paper, and started taking notes. He loves math, and wanted to figure out multiplication. Isaak's only in first grade. I was worried about the DVD confusing him. He's only covered addition and subtraction. When products say a certain age, or grade and up it's usually wise to wait.
It may look like chicken scratch, but he was trying to learn it. He filled the back of his paper with notes to. He seemed so eager to learn. Isaak always love numbers. He isn't as into reading though.
Both my boys loved Rock N Learn Multiplication RAP DVD! It kept them entertained. The raps were catchy, and not annoying. I give it 4 stars out of 4 stars.

He's Reading!
I'm a firm believer that kids do things at their own rate. Mica refused to cut, and barely colored until something snapped. Then he was all about cutting and coloring. Isaak's been reading words since last year. He was confident in his reading to read books just yet. I'd try off and on, and he didn't want to read. Mica, Daddy and I would read to him instead.
Just this week Isaak decided he was ready to read! It's really exciting to me when kids figure things out. I'm pretty happy for him. It will also be nice that he can read when we go on a road trip this summer!
I love seeing him so happy to be reading!
Little man is also getting really good with math. They are starting him with the common core math. I think that will be another post in its self. There are positive and negatives with that. I'm reserving judgment until I, myself learn more about this style of math. All I can say right now is that Isaak seems to be picking math up very well.

Learning
Mica has homework. It's really easy for him right now, so Daddy gives him more homework. The hard thing for him right now is telling time. I had the hardest time telling time when I was little to. I said to myself, "Why bother? All the clocks at home are digital. At school they always tell me when and where to go." It just slipped by me. Then in 5th or 6th grade I took a standard test, and it was caught that I didn't know how to tell time. I had to go where all the kids who are challenged go; to learn how to tell time. So Mica is learning. He learned last year, but forgot, or it didn't sink in.
Since Isaak doesn't have homework yet, I've been giving him activity books to work on. Previously Isaak had no interest in activity books. I'd buy them for vacation, and he refused to even pull them out. Now that he sees Mica doing homework, he's getting into them.
I set a table up for Isaak in the living room. His room is pretty small, so not a lot of room for too many things.
Then we're trying to get Mica involved with Isaak. Mica generally has always liked to do things on his own. Daddy's talked with him about working with Isaak on sight words. We saved Mica's sight words that he had to learn from the past. Then I had Mica read to Isaak at bedtime.

Rotten Apples
I took my nephew Elijah and Isaak over to Lakeshore to build an apple tree craft.
They were both really into decorating right away. Then I noticed that Elijah and all the other kids were coloring their apples a pretty red. Isaak on the other hand barely colored his. They had a black stripe and a little red around that.
He handed me his apple tree and said, "Here mom this is for you. It's a rotten apple tree." I said, "Thanks!" In a sarcastic way. Then I said, "Way to think outside the box son."
Then he freaked out when his rotten apples were taken by the wind outside. I ran after them to save them; even though they are rotten. ;)

Vocabulary
I was reading Isaak a farm book last night, while we were at the Y during Mica's Jiu-jitsu class.
There were words that I knew he didn't know the meaning of. I asked him:
"Do you know what a 'heard' is?"
"Do you know what 'graze' is?"
"Do you know what a 'flock' is?"
"Do you know what 'jive' means?"
Of course I went over these words at different times; when we came across the words. Each time he said, "No." I would explain to him what each word was and ask him again what the words meant? He didn't know. He didn't listen to me at all.
Finally he said, "Mom just read the book already! I just want to hear the story!"
I told him, "Isaak part of reading is learning what the words are about. The story doesn't make sense if you don't know what the words mean."
Isaak said, "Mom that's what school is for."
I said, "Yes you learn in school, but you also learn at home. You are going to start getting homework. We have to do that at home."
Isaak said, "Just read the story Mom."
Maybe it's wrong, but I refused to read to him. I said, "If I'm going to read to you, you have to be willing to learn from me."
Last night I tucked him in his covers and said, "Isaak you get to go to school to meet your teacher tomorrow for Open House. How exciting! Are you excited?"
Isaak said, "Mom I told you I'm not excited at all."
This is going to be one heck of a transition!
For the record I'm super excited for Isaak!
I think Kindergarten will be good for him. Mica couldn't wait to grow up. Isaak on the other hand doesn't want to grow up. He needs a slight push. He'd be totally fine with us taking care of him the rest of his life. By the way he loved preschool!
Daddy and I haven't had the same weekend for 8 years! He worked the weekends to have Thursday and Friday off. Then Grandma and Grandpa watched them 1 day a week, Aunt Terra watched them 2 days a week. Daddy watched our 2 nephews on Thursday and Friday. Then when Emerson was born 2 years ago, Terra couldn't work our system any longer. My parents took on 3 days for us. This summer Daddy barely worked (only 3 days a week), so my parents only had 1 day to watch the crazy kids. I took 1/2 hour lunches to pick them up early (at 2:30) on that day. It will be nice to have weekends back. We can actually go places. People can come see us; see all of us.

Reading Kingdom Review
Reading Kingdom is an online reading & writing program for children ages 4 to 10 years old.
I was thinking Mica (almost age 8) would love this! He's big into reading, writing and technology. Mica did like their games, but he seemed to grasp things too easily. He read 7 chapter books over the weekend, if that tell you anything. The boy's nose is stuck in a book all the time. His teacher told us that he's way above his level.
It's good I had another kid to try their learning games on. Isaak (age 5) really liked it! He first watched Mica play, then played himself. I could see his mind wheels were turning. Sometimes he'd stop playing and ask, "Mom what letter do I put in there?" At first I helped him. The next session I just told him to figure it out. I love that they have the kids repeat a word in a different way. This helps them to learn it.

Learning/Reading Websites For Kids
A week ago we went to Mica's school for a book swap. They also went over a lot with parents. One of the things is websites to refer to for learning/reading.
Websites for Children:
Starfall: This one is great for preschool all the way up to 2nd grade. Kids that are just learning their letter sounds will gain a lot from this website!
Isaak's in the ABCs section, while Mica's in the Learn to Read and It's Fun to Read ones. They have games that fit their level. Mica's learning how to place the sound of the letter in the context of the word. I'm Reading has Comic Books, Greek Myths, Fables and more!
KS1 Bitesize: This one is for both literary as well as math skills.
Math includes: Add, Subtract, Multiply and Divide. It also includes Time, Money and more.
Literacy includes: Phonics, Spelling, Rhyming, Sentence Structure and more.
Jump Start: This one you do have to register for. You can opt out anytime. It is free. Their games are super fun and of course learning based.
Form Swift - Common Core Lesson Plans: This one is great for coming up with Math • Science • English lesson plans. I'm always working on lesson plans for my kids during the summer. It's free. You can print out lesson plans in PDF format.
Sheppard Software: This has all kind of learning games for all ages.
Story Place: Has online books.
abcya: Has all kinds of learning apps. Something I'm totally not into yet, but probably should be. You get to pick their grade level, which is great! Oh and the illustrations I love!
Literacy CyberSpace: Has a ton of sites to go to for the age level of your child. This one goes all the way up to High School! If you're looking for a site for your child to go to over the summer, this is the one!
Storyline Online: Has books for younger kids that celebs read. Yes Betty White reads Dirty Harry. I assure you it's not dirty in an adult way! This site is strictly for kids!
Story Starter: This is put on by Scholastic. It has a roulette wheel and picks topics for kids to write about. This is great for older elementary; for when they want to write a story, but don't know where to start.
Kabongo: This is another one you do have to register for. It is free. They do not email you like crazy. I know because I have an account. Mica loves playing it!
