First Camp - Mini Health Sciences Camp

Mica's at his first camp this week. It's through school, but mostly at Creighton University and one day at Bergan Mercy Hospital.

Creighton University's Ceiling is amazing!

The best thing about this camp is that it's free! Because he got into The Health Care Academy in middle school, he has to participate in the Mini Health Sciences Camp. I'm not saying that in a negative way. I'm glad.

The worst thing lately is that we realized before camp yesterday that Mica grew so much in the last month, that his shorts are too short and tight. It's like I need to go buy him a whole new wardrobe on his bottom half. I'm not kidding. I got him all new shorts right before Easter. He's as tall as the clock now. I have trouble touching the top of the clock.

Camp Schedule:

Monday:

They started out with a debriefing. A panel of different students were up front giving advice on high school and college life. That included how to get in.

They dissected sheep eyes. Crazy! Mica doesn't like to touch raw meat in the kitchen. I would have loved to of been a fly on that wall.

A Tour of Creighton Campus

Tuesday:

Occupational Therapy

Lab Work

Pharmacy Activity

Health Living

Wednesday:

Another Tour of a Different Area of the Campus

Physical Therapy

Thursday:

A Tour of Bergan Mercy Hospital

Friday:

Pharmacology Research and Tour

Healthy Living Again

Effects of Drugs of People

Swag:

He got a shirt, bag, and water bottle, for the camp.

Trend:

Have you noticed a trend in the medical field, or coding where it's mostly girls? There are 10 girls in Mini Health Sciences Camp, and only 4 or 5 boys.

I noticed that being a teacher for web, where there's coding there's way more girls than boys. It didn't used to be that way. A lot of places are pushing coding for girls, and not pushing coding for boys at all. Just something I observed.

5 steps to getting yourself onto the path to fitness

Summer is fast approaching and with it comes the usual mad rush to shed some pounds in order to look good on that beach vacation. Desperate attempts to exercise, crash diets and even starvation are the lengths that people will go to in a last-ditch effort for that summer holiday.

That makes it the perfect time of year to think about sustainable, long-term exercise that lasts all year round rather than just when you’re planning on jetting off to warmer climates for a couple of weeks.

By making an effort to become fitter, you’ll be able to look good on a beach no matter what time of year it is. You’ll also be improving your health, extending your life expectancy, and becoming an all-round happier person.

The thought of getting fit can seem daunting at first, but the payoff is worth it. To get you started, here are the steps you need to take to get yourself onto the path to fitness.

Have the right attitude

You might think that getting fit requires the muscles and moving parts of the body to be working at their strongest, but it is actually the brain, which is the critical component. Your mind can be the difference between succeeding and failing at your goal.

Like any significant changes, getting fit takes time, and success may not come straight away. Despite the inevitable setbacks that will happen, such as when you don’t lose as much weight as you expected you would, you need to maintain a positive attitude. Believe you can do it and chances are you will - the most important thing is never to give up.

Take part in physical activity

The best way to improve your fitness levels is to take part in strenuous physical activity. The good news is that there is such a variety that there is going to be something out there to suit everyone, no matter what their budget or time restraints may be.

Take Parkrun, for example. This free event takes place every Saturday and is a timed and organized 5k run around a park. All that you need to take part is a set of trainers and a Parkrun barcode, which you can print from the internet for free and which gives you your time at the end. Anyone can take part, and it’s a great way to get you into running.

If running isn’t your thing, then you could join a gym. Or if the idea of working out in front of other people scares you as it does large numbers of Americans, then why not pay for some gym equipment for your home?

There are two positives to this approach. One is that you can then exercise in the comfort of your own home, no matter what the weather is doing nor what time it is. The second is that if you’ve paid to install gym equipment, chances are you’ll want to get your money’s worth and so you will feel duty-bound to use it.

Secondhand gym equipment can be bought for a fairly reasonable price. If you want to kit your home out with brand new equipment but can’t afford it, then why not take out a loan from Bonsai Finance to pay for it? You can read this for more information on the services they offer.

Play sports

While the likes of running and going to the gym are the most effective ways to get fit; you can also take up sports as a means of improving your fitness levels. Playing tennis or squash against your friends will get your heart pumping, and the competitiveness will spur you on to push yourself harder than you might if you were just exercising alone.

You could even join a sports club to meet likeminded people. Not only will signing up for the local soccer or track team improve your fitness levels, but you’ll also be opening yourself up to a whole new social circle of individuals who all share your passion for sport and getting fit. That can only be a good thing in terms of keeping you on track to achieve your goals.

Keep a fitness diary

The best way to convince your mind that your new fitness regime is taking effect is to keep a fitness diary in which you record virtually everything that you do that pertains to your physical wellbeing.

Write down how much exercise you did and how long for each day. If you ran 3k or swam 20 lengths at the local pool, make a note of it. Then, when you look back through in a week’s time after running 5k or swimming 25 lengths, you’ve got tangible evidence of improvement.

There are all kinds of fitness apps available now, which allow you to input your exercise for that day or even track your run by GPS. Apps like Strava which attracts a million new users every 40 days even allow your friends to give you ‘kudos’ for the exercise you’ve done, encouraging you to do more and allowing them to share in the excitement of your progress.

Start eating right

Exercise will only get you so far – it has to go hand in hand with healthy eating as well if you want to truly increase your fitness levels. After all, there is little point burning lots of calories only to spend the next two days living off fast food. Switch to wholegrain foods, replace unhealthy snacks like potato chips and candy with fruit and vegetables, and drink lots of water – up to 2 liters a day.

That may not sound like much fun, but there is good news; because of all the exercise you’ll be doing, you need to eat lean foods as well to keep your protein levels topped up. That’s lean meat, eggs and at least one meal a week which consists of fresh seafood. The point is, you can still have a tasty diet even when you are trying to get fit.

Prostate Supplement for Active Men - Saw Palmetto Enhanced Review

I think it's important to take care of yourself any way that you can.

I got Travis a product made by Zen Naturally. It's the Ultra Man Care product for prostate health. It's for active men, and Travis is always active doing something. It's Saw Palmetto Enhanced - Veggie Capsules.

What it Helps With:

-Healthy Urination & Frequency Flow
-Prostate Health
-Better Sleep
-Healthier Hair

This product may block 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. DHT is the molecule responsible for hair loss and also is involved in the enlargement of the prostate. I say may because every body is in fact different. What works for one, doesn't work for another.

Where to Get it:

Get it on Amazon Prime for $15.99 $15.19: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JJRB9VW. They do have different buying options.

It did come with a foam top and plastic that covered the lid.

I do wish there were more pill + bump up the cost, or shrink the bottle. Most pill bottles waist so much room. I'm one that cares about our landfills. I recycle, but know not all recyclables get recycled. Sad, but true. I reuse when I can. I just wish pill and food companies didn't waist so much room in the packaging.

Instructions:

There are 60 pills. You are to take 2 at a time. It's best to drink an 8 ounce glass of water, take the 2 pills 30 minutes before eating for the best results.

We tend to take our pills in the morning with breakfast. I'm thinking this should be one Travis takes before dinner.

What's a pill you take to make you a healthier you?

Leather #Portfolio Folder Padfolio for Business School Office Conference Presentation Interview Review

In a week Mica starts his first camp for the Healthcare Academy. I wanted him to have something to keep all his papers together all fancy like.

Thankfully we got a Leather Portfolio for him to use.

Inside:

The inside has different pockets for him to put papers. Right now I have his certificate that he got. He can put other papers in there too.

There's a pen holder as well.

I Love That...

It feels good to hold. Leather just it a fancy material!

The pockets are unique in that they are 3 different sizes.

It's great for many uses. It would be wonderful for job interviews, school, or business use.

I Wish That...

It had a zipper, so papers in no way will fly out on a windy day. It does have a rubber texture that holds things in.

I wish it had one more holder, for an additional pen. I mean what if one goes out? I always carry more than one, just in case.

Cost:

Do you have something fancy to hold important papers?

AncordWorks Waterproof Outdoor Bluetooth Speaker Review

When Mica was Isaak's age I made sure he got a speaker, to go with his phone. The boys love music. I got Isaak an AncordWorks Waterproof Outdoor Bluetooth Speaker to review.

Where to Get It:

The speaker shipped out really fast! You can get it on Amazon Prime for $15.99 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CH9FRYS.

Colors:

It only comes in orange. I do wish it came in other colors. I like orange, but variety is great!

Waterproof:

They show pictures on their Amazon page in water. I don't know that I'd put it in water. It is great that it's safe in the bathroom, where it's steamy. It would be great on the side of a pool. If water splashes up on it, it's safe.

Hanger:

It has a hanger, to hang on a hook.

Buttons:

The buttons are under silicone rubber to protect them. There is a hard rubber piece that opens for a charging cord, and to make it wired instead of bluetooth.

Do you love to listen to music? Do you find it to be a stress reliever?

Riwbox Bluetooth Headphones Review

Mica likes to listen to music and a few YouTube channels. Recently his favorite headphones kept shorting out. They certainly don't make them like they used to. Possibly they don't last as long because they are bluetooth. Wires aren't fun. He loves to have a set on the bus ride to and from school. Pretty soon he'll be going to his Health Care Academy Camp, and will again be on the bus.

Turn up the radio with Riwbox Bluetooth Headphones!

This set came with a black charging cable, and a white listening cable.

Brand:

Riwbox is the brand. You can get this set on Amazon for $28.85 on Prime https://www.amazon.com//dp/B0798MYJ26.

Tuning Me Out:

I joke when he listens to his headphones that he puts them in to tune me out. Maybe it's to tune his brother out. Ha! These do keep the sound in, and outside noises out.

They fold up too! Mica shows that in the video below. It's great because then they can be thrown in a backpack.

Colors:

White and Gold
Black and Gold
White and Silver
Purple and Green

Do you like earbuds or headphones?

#sleepwithlinenly Review

I love a new set of sheets! I'm really spoiled with Linenly Bamboo Sheets. They feel so soft! This set has a 400 thread count! It contains no harmful chemicals, which is great for my allergies/asthma!

The Sheets Came in this Bag:

I like how the bag tell you all about your sheets, and how to care for them. I do think the turquoise ink is hard to read on the grey fabric.

Includes:

1 fitted sheet
1 flat sheet
2 pillow cases

I sometimes wish sets had 4 pillowcases. My Mom said she's bought sets with 4 before. Many people sleep with more than 1 pillow + it's great to switch pillowcases out more so than your sheets during allergy season.

It is great that they sent me a grey set. I do have other grey sets, so I can pair up their pillow cases with this set.

Colors:

White
Ivory
Grey Blue
Light Grey
Violet Pink
Forest
Olive Green
Platinum
Taupe

I didn't really have a choice, for color. BUT would totally pick the color they sent me, or platinum.

Care:

I wash my sheets before putting them on my bed. They did dry a bit wrinkly. They are super soft.

Wash in cold water, use no fabric softener, line dry, or dry on the cool setting.

I used to dry my sheets outside on a line. Sheets smell good when they are line dried outside. I just don't know it they collect pollen, when they are out there. I dry my sheets in the dryer.

Bed Made:

I did feel like the fitted sheet worked great. You know how some are hard to fold over the corners? This set isn't like that at all!

They pride themselves of having long sheets. I'd rather have shorter sheets on the sides. Then the comforter/duvet will cover up the sheets.

Sizes:

Queen | King

Who has room for a King Sized Bed? Not I. I have a Queen. I do wish however that they sold Twin too! I'm looking for a set to replace Mica's bedding.

Happy Camper:

Overall I'm really happy with this set! You can get it here https://www.linenly.com.au/products/bamboo-sheet-set for $239.95 $164.95. The set is on sale.

Random Tid Bits

  1. I've been battling a cold all week. Mica had it last week.

I thought it was just allergies. He was complaining of a sore throat, being tired and achy.

I said, "Do the Neti Pot, wash your hair, take some Zyrtec, change your pillow case, and go to bed early. It's just allergies." He swore it was more than allergies. I didn't believe him.

Now I have, had this more than allergies thing, have apologized to him, and believe him.

  2. I got my allergy shots on the 13th. I get 3. I bruised up so bad on the arm where I get 2 at once. I kind of made a big deal out of it because I never reacted like that before. I message the doctor's office. He told me to send photos to the nurse. I did, and heard nothing back. This is a week after getting my shots on the 20th.

  3. Mica was reading a book when I was driving, "Mom pro is the opposite of con. That must mean progress is the opposite of congress." I said, "Pretty much."

  4. My school got out last Friday, and the boys got out this Wednesday. We're done with school, for now. Are schools out where you live? I know some places had to go longer because of the snow. I don't know how we escaped that.

  5. I picked up Isaak from school last Friday. Only to be greeted by his smiling teacher. I asked, "Did Isaak have a good day today? I know he's been struggling with attention problems, since it's so close to the end of the year." She said, "No. He had a rough day. He didn't get done with his tests." Apparently they had SIX tests in ONE day! I can see why he was struggling! He had to take what he got done for 2. I get the standard tests. Why have tests for their main subject the same day as the standard ones? I just think SIX tests in ONE day for elementary seems like a lot! Do you think it's too much to have SIX tests in ONE day?

WW: The Renaissance Festival of Nebraska {Linky}

Two weekends ago we went to The Renaissance Festival of Nebraska. It was fun! I haven't ever been as an adult.

Favorite Parts:

We loved watching people duel! That's where I got the most pictures.

The food was great! We only got to enjoy a Funnel Cake. I haven't had one for years! It did suck it was so windy. I had powdered sugar all over my glasses. When I tried to clean them off, it was a smeary mess. I heard their beer is good. I didn't have a cold one.

Wishes:

I do wish there were more booths that let kids have hands on activities like making soap on a rope, candles, and crafts. Most of the booths were things you buy. That's fine, but interaction is ideal in my mind.

I loved seeing people dressed up. I couldn't understand why some dressed up as something other than the Renaissance period. It's not a Comic Con. Ha!

This guy said Isaak was wanted:

Prisoner:

Dueling:

The Queen:

Fencing:

Have you been to a Renaissance Festival? What was your favorite part(s)?

Happy Birthday Isaak!

Dear Isaak,

You turned 11 today!

We spent much of the weekend in the car, but loved spending time with the Apel side of the family. We don't get to see them as often as the Spiehs side. Grandma Apel made you chocolate cake. Nom Nom!

You moved up in the world, and got your first cell phone. Kind of necessary when we don't have a land line. You're excited to take the Babysitting Class at the Omaha Public Library this summer. They have Basic First Aid as part of the class.

Activities:

You were too busy this year. We had to take something out of your schedule. You want to sign up for everything.

You enjoyed (not all at once) Show Choir, Strings, Basketball, Soccer, Student Council, Chess Club, and Safety Patrol this year. You go to Banister Leadership Academy on Saturday nights. We made you drop Chorus because you were so busy.

Favorites:

I still think your favorite thing to do is draw. When you don't have homework, or a sport you draw.

We've been watching all the shows of Medium on Amazon Prime. It's our show!

You go back and forth from liking basketball to liking soccer.

You love free nights where there's no homework to do. It's a woo hoo! moment!

If we celebrate it, you totally dig Taco Tuesday.

You are gentle with younger kids.

You like to hang out with kids that are nice. Your words, not mine.

You are goofy, yet empathetic.

You like to cuddle.

You're a good helper. You enjoy working outdoors the most. You hardly complain with any other task given to you.

I know you're growing like a weed! You snack all the time, and often have seconds for dinner. Later this week we get to see how tall you are, at a well visit with Doctor Harrison.

We Have to Work on:

Being speedy. You are our kid that takes awhile to get ready in the morning. You eat slow. Taking tests slow is a struggle. Especially when there are 6 tests in one day. I feel for you with that one. I'm a slow test taker too! Any helpful sites, please comment with them!

New Chapter:

You start Beveridge Middle School in the fall. It's an art and world cultural studies magnet school. We're all so excited! One of your classes will be Piano Lessons!

Happy Birthday once again!

Love,

Mom
