WW: Joy

Last week was a rough week!

My almost 13 year old was picked on at school. He was called the "N" word over and over again, and shoved around during a no touch football game. I was sad he was sad. When human's are picked on it's not just because of their skin. Sometimes it's for different reasons. I have a long list of artist friends and many of them have gotten picked on because they think differently. Don't they know that artists paint their bland world? It's also not "popular" to be nice. Isaak's both an artist and is nice.

My coworker told me to contact the Division Officer at the school about it. I sent an email, and got back an email from the Division Officer that same day, had not one, but two phone calls from the Principal and Vice Principal at the school to call and talk to me personally about the incident. They are opening up dialog about the issue to all the students, and the boys that caused him to cry are getting in trouble. I don't even want to know how. The boy that stood by Isaak the whole time is now Isaak's bestie. They talked on the phone for an hour last night. Isaak may of been pushed down, but he's being built up. He even put together a desk, for the most part all by himself.

Then Mica is fully remote, and got this postcard in the mail. Things are starting to turn around.

The Story of the Teal Chair

Isaak had in his room a preschool/Kindergarten type table, and 2 small chairs. He was out growing it. I thought we'd have to buy him a desk at Ikea. It needed to be small to fit in the space he has. Then it dawned on me that I had a unused desk downstairs that he could use.

Out went the small table and chairs. Thankfully my sister Terra took them in.

Up went my old desktop computer desk that used to be my sister's when she was a kid.

The chair in Mica's room belonged to the desk that is now in Isaak's room. I hot glued felt on the bottom of the chair, so it wouldn't further scratch our wood floors. Isaak now has the chair.

Mica needed a new chair. The trouble was, that his desk has a narrow chair opening. We went to ShopKo to look at an office chair. They only had 1 chair, it was too wide. We went to our biggest furniture store, Nebraska Furniture Mart. They had a ton of office chairs, but only 2 would fit the space. Both were black, $55 and $75, and 1 was out of stock. I thought about Office Depot/OfficeMax, but so many have closed I was unsure of where they are even at. I called Big Lots, which was right down the street to see if they had office chairs without handles. I was noticing the added handles are what made them too wide for his desk. They had a chair on sale for $34.

We drove there, and picked up a black chair! The store clerk stopped us and said, "Do you know that they come in other colors?" We're like, "Nope!" They came in grey (out of stock), red (more of a coral color), and teal. Mica's like, "Yes! I want the teal one!"

Mica grabbed the chair box, and insisted on caring it throughout the store. It was pretty heavy for him.

Teal goes much better in his room. He has a bright orange locker in his room, and a teal drawer on his locker bed. Complimentary colors work well together.

We got home, and Mica wanted to put his chair together. I said, "I don't know...your birthday is on Wednesday. I thought you could wait to put it together." Of course I was joking. He helped Travis put it together right away.

What's something you were excited to get when you were younger?

Solana Adjustable Wood Desk Easel with Drawers Review

I've been wanting a small easel for Isaak to put on his desk. He loves to draw, and work on art. I got Solana Adjustable Wood Desk Easel with Drawers to review. It's pretty neat.

Once I opened it up, and used it I realized that it's not really for Isaak. The open holes won't allow him to draw on there without putting something behind the paper. The drawer was kind of hard for me to pull out, let alone a 7 year old.

I'm keeping it for me. As an art instructor it's perfect. I'm using it for demos in the classroom.
  • It comes fully assembled
  • It transports easily
  • It's wood, so it's sturdy
  • It fits things inside the drawers with 3 different compartments
  • It doesn't take up a lot of room
  • It will accommodate a canvas up to 11"x14"
  • The easel has 4 different positions for painting or drawing
  • It has a handle, so I can take it from room to room

No it's not going to work for Isaak, but it will work for me. :)

Usually I use canvas, or Illustration board to work on, so the holes in the easel do not bother me one bit.

I still have a little problem opening the drawer. I do like that it has a latch system to ensure that things won't fall out.
