Random Tid Bits

  1. Isaak said to me, "Mom I found out something that Benjamin knows the same as me!" Benjamin his friend from Argentina. I asked, "What's that Isaak?" He said, "He knows Indiana Jones. I started humming it, and he hummed it right along with me." Isaak was pretty excited about that.

  2. Mica went from not wanting to try anything, to wanting to try just about everything that comes his way. Before Spring Break, "Mom can I try volleyball? Aiden says it's just for girls, but it says nothing on here about it being just for girls." I read the memo and said, "Sure." Well I thought it was just at school; teaching them the sport. Just the other day I got a letter saying that the teacher will drop them off at other schools, and we have to pick them up. This kid is also in Chess Club, another round for Read to Succeed, band and he wanted to play his first ball sport - soccer at the Y. I told Travis to show up at his first practice, and if the games got in the way of other things just to bow out.

Travis went, had fun watching, and never said anything. Can you tell I'm not that Mom that likes to stay busy? I like my own life too. Up until this point sports didn't dominate our lives. I was completely happy with that. I guess I should be happy they are not involved in baseball. That's a high maintenance sport, schedule wise. Ha! I do like that Mica's trying things. Isaak's completely happy playing basketball. He loves the sport.

  3. Mica found out what middle school he's going too. It was his top pick. Many of his friends aren't going there. There's many middle schools for the district. I just said, "Just be glad you didn't get your home school.", which his home school sucks! I said, "Mica you're likable! You'll make friends. If you hate it, we'll send you somewhere else the next year."

I'm doing what many parents have already done, and Mica's getting a cell phone for his 12th birthday. He's not only getting it to take to middle school (bussing), but 12 year olds can start to babysit. We no longer have a home phone. He'll need it.

  4. My sister and I got our sons in the camp that fills up within minutes. Yes you read that right! It's only $95 per camper. That includes bussing, and it's all week, all day. They wear them out! This is what Isaak looked like at the end of his camp a few years back:

  5. He wasn't sad, or pissed. He was just worn, out and tired. I thought by the looks of it that he had a rough time. NOPE! He got the award for being the most enthusiastic. HA!

  6. The boys will go to the outdoor camp, a math/science camp, an acting camp, a leadership Sat. night camp, and in spring sports. We don't have daycare per say. Instead we try and fill their summer time up with camps. What kind of camp(s) did you go to when you were younger?

Random Tid Bits

  1. I had a conversation with the boys about soda.

Me: I just don't want you boys drinking soda a lot. I know someone at my work that drank Mountain Dew and got kidney stones.

    Mica: What are kidney stones?

Me: Well it's like a small stone(s) that is trapped in your kidneys. The only way to get it out is by peeing it out. If it's really big they have to do surgery. I heard that peeing out a kidney stone sometimes hurts worse than having a baby.

Mica: I don't want to pee out a stone. I won't drink Mountain Dew ever.

Me: Well don't drink Mountain Dew.

At school a few days later Mica won a prize. He picked to have a soda. It surprised me that they even had that option considering that they don't even want parents to pack juice in their school lunches.

Mica ran up to Daddy after school and whispered: Dad is this soda going to give me kidney stones? I don't want to have to pee out a stone!

Daddy knew nothing about our conversation about soda. He laughed and said: I think if you just have one soda you're fine.

  2. Mica hates spiders. I don't know where he got this fear of spiders.

Mica: I just killed 3 spiders in my room with my Indiana Jones whip.

Me: Yuck, make sure you clean the spider guts off your whip and floor with toilet paper. Are you sure there were 3 spiders you killed?

    Mica: Ya Mom I'm sure.

*Cleaning it up Mica said Oh I guess it was just 1. The others are just crack designs in our wood floor.

  3. Both boys love to talk about natural disasters. Isaak calls a hurricane "Hore-i-cane".  It's too funny to correct.

  4. Mica has been asking me for weeks: Mom am I old enough to have a frappe yet?

    Me: What's do you want?

At first I don't know what he's talking about. He pronounces it as "frape" rhyming with grape.

My answer: No you can't have a frappe.

  5.  We went to a wedding this last weekend. In the reception hall people were smoking.

Me: Look at that the worker...she is smoking.

Daddy: What are we seriously stuck in the 1990s?

Me: That's sort of what I was thinking.

Daddy: I thought that was illegal to smoke inside everywhere.

    Source
Is it illegal to smoke in public places where you live. It's illegal to smoke inside all public places in Nebraska. Even bars and bowling allies are smoke free.

WW: Indie Birthday Party {Linky}

My son Mica loves Indiana Jones. For his 9th birthday party along with the other birthdays close to his, I made an Indie poster. Mica is Indie, my sister Terra is Willie Scott, and my husband Travis is Short Round.

Mica got all in character. He was dressed to look just like Indiana Jones at 7 AM, when the party didn't start until 12 PM. It took a few test shots (his words) to make sure his hat was just right.

Mica was a little irritated that his Dad wouldn't dress up like Short Round, and his Aunt wouldn't dress up like Willie Scott.

He put the movie in just to have the intro play in a loop. You could say I was sick of hearing that after 30 minutes. It did make me smile though.

As soon as my parent's got there Mica posed at the door. My Dad opened up his trap and said, "Who are you a cowboy." He just about crushed Indie's little heart.

The kids were of course playing Indiana Jones in the backyard. They were pretending Natzi's were after them.

My Aunt Becky got him an Indiana Jones book, and activity book. She was excited that she found them for a $1 each. Then she put money in the pages. Mica said, "I really am rich now." They were dollar bills. He got a few Lego sets, and some books he wanted.

Here's part of the family:

I couldn't even fit them all in the shot. My small house + 19 people = fun and chaos. It's a good thing it was warm outside. The kids ate outside, and played on the Slip n Slide.

Usually I decorate an elaborate cake with the kid's theme on it. Not this year. Mica wanted Cheese Cake. Hey less work for me. :)

WW: Superheros Every Day {Linky}

This is just a typical day at my house. Just like any other.

Meet Dr. Jones AKA Mica

He put on his slipper shoes because they matched best with his Indiana Jones costume. He used to have a whip, but that's long time gone. I think one of them unbraided it, and I threw it out. He still has his satchel though.

Meet Spidy AKA Isaak

When Isaak dresses up like Spiderman he puts on his Spiderman slipper socks, he Spiderman shoes, his Spiderman winter gloves and sometimes his Spiderman cape. I don't know how he does it in the heat. I couldn't stand it with all that on. He has to get in character though.

This is how they go outside to play most of the time. I wonder what our neighbors think?
Whoever thinks dressing up is only for girls should talk to my boys that dress up all the time. It enhances their creativity. They are my superheros.

WW - More Halloween Photos {Linky}

Isaak the Dino:

Mica as Indiana Jones:

Isaak was also Little Jack Horner for preschool:

His shirt looks funny, but it's the best photo of him I could get. He went to school with a pie to.

Happy Halloween!!!

Daddy took the boys out trick or treating, while I passed out candy. It's pretty low key. We take turns passing out candy.

The boys were super excited to go out. I made them put on their costumes early, so I could get some good photos.

These are not all of them. I just wanted to put up a few. Next week for my Wordless Wednesday I'll put up more.

Isaak the dinosaur. He kept saying, "RAWR" loudly! Daddy said that someone said to Isaak, "Can I put candy in your pail?" Isaak said, "It's not a pail, it's a bucket."

Mica as Indiana Jones. No surprise; he's been wearing his costume for the last 2 months off and on! He was excited that Mommy finally let him play with his whip. Someone asked Mica, "Can I put candy in your bag?" Mica said, "It's not a bag. It's a satchel." Funny I just looked to make sure I spelled "satchel" right, and it's defined as being a bag. ;)

Fiction or Non-Fiction?

Mica's teacher told us that Mica has a clear understanding of what is fiction and what is non-fiction. She read them a handful of books, gave them pictures of the books and they had to place the books in the correct categories. Mica matched them all right.

Why then does he think that Spider-man, Superman and Indiana Jones are real? We've even told him that they are fake. They are just characters that save the day. "Harrison Ford is an actor Mica. He is not really Indiana Jones!" -Daddy. I think it comes down to this: Kids believe what they want to believe. Mica has wanted to be Indiana Jones when he grows up for five months now. He learned most about Indiana Jones from a comic book. The movies are pretty violent. What Daddy and I once watched as kids are no longer appropriate for young kids today.

Superhero's are real to Mica. Even when we tell Mica they are fake, he still thinks they are real.

That is probably why the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny stay so real in a child's mind. Some kids are told in the classroom, "Santa is not real! Your Mom and Dad are Santa." Then the kid responds with, "He is to real!" Hollywood puts out movies to reinforce the reality to something that is not real. After Polar Express, I found myself wanting to believe.

Is Santa is fiction or nonfiction? Not the parent's/media kind. He was a real person, so that is what I'm talking about. You can read about St. Nickolas here if you are interested.

WW - Indiana Jones {Linky}

These days Mica doesn't want to be called, "Mica." He wants to be called, "Indiana Jones" aka "Indie."

This is his Halloween costume that he's worn 2 days in a row and off and on before then. I really don't think he'll get sick of his costume before Halloween. He's REALLY into character! Everyone on the playground was calling him, "Indiana Jones." He told me that I'm the lady he saves in the end. ;) He knows he can't date until he's 16, so I'm the next best thing.

Oh...that is not a purse. It's a satchel. He keeps artifacts in it. This weekend his artifacts were plastic Halloween bones.

The only part of the costume he doesn't have yet is the whip. Yes it came with a whip. I'm not about to get that out early. I can see some damage done with that weapon.

Last Night We Went to Borders

I am completely saddened by Borders closing their doors. I'm sad not only because they are a great store, but also that technology is taking over, it worries me with the future of our kids and all their employee's that will lose their job's in this crappy economy.

I'm for technology. Here I have a blog, I have the latest, greatest laptop and I have a good camera. At the same time technology has hurt bookstores and killed Borders! It reminds me of the book Farenheit 451, where people burned books instead of buying them. Ok, so we're not there, but bookstores and probably publishing companies are hurting.

Illustrator's and photographer's have been hurting the last two decades do to Stock Houses. Why buy original artwork, when you can get cheaper, reproduced pieces online?

Then there's the music industry. I feel for them to! Why buy a CD if you can download the song you want for free or cheap?

The movie industry is hurting too. Hummm...shall I say Blockbuster.

Did you know that they are taking cursive writing out of most schools because they want to push typing?

Yep technology is our best friend and our worst enemy!

Last night I lined up to look through books that were marked down. Many were only 10% off, and others were 40% off.

I called up Aunt Terra to see if she wanted me to get her boy's anything? I got Elijah Usborne's Illustrated Stories for Boy's and a similar book for my own boys.

Mica spotted this comic book (images found here):

Their Christmas stuff was marked down pretty good, so we picked out a few Christmas classic stories. Daddy and I got a few books as well. I also got the original Karate Kid movie.

Other random bits:

Mica pulled out his comic book to look at first thing when he woke up!

Isaak asked to look in the mirror last night and this morning just to make sure his eye looked normal. It does, but that was scary!

I'm pretty sure I've developed an allergy to latex like Aunt Terra and Grandma Spiehs. I have a burn that I got while making cookies. It is healing, but it also started peeling because my arm rubs against my shirt. When I carry things, it rubs the burn as well. I've put on Neosporin and a Band-Aid. Well I can't stand it because the Band-Aid itches my skin like CRAZY! Band-Aids have itched before, but nothing like now!

Drunk? No! Just Plain Tired!

The end of day 2 on our Staycation was wearing on Isaak. He actually fell asleep in his car seat! This rarely happens!

In the hotel we went swimming and laid in bed. One of the later Indiana Jones movies was on and Daddy and I fell asleep. Guess who stayed up to watch it? Our 2 boy's. Daddy woke up and they were glued to the TV. We hope that it wasn't too scary!

In the morning the boy's looked like this:

Wordless Wednesday - Indiana Jones AKA Mica Apel

Mica got mad when I called him, "Indiana Jones." He looked like him to me. I said, "Why don't you want to be called Indiana Jones Mica?" He said, "Because I don't know who he is!"

We watched a few action scene's on YouTube, and he said, "Mommy you can call me Indiana Jones now!" We have an Indiana Jones fan in our house!

He's been humming the theme song around our house.
