The ultimate guide to buying glasses online

After a year of staying at home and shopping online, we’ve all become experts at finding the best deals on the web. But one item that still seems risky to buy online is glasses. What if you don’t like the style, or the prescription is wrong?

Here is the ultimate guide on how to buy the perfect pair of glasses online.

Face shape

Whether you just need to buy reading glasses, or want a brand-new pair of prescription specs, finding the perfect style can be tricky.

While you’ll need a proper eye test to advise you on the right prescription, no one can actually advise you on the right frames. To make this even more difficult, online glasses retailers have a larger variety than any physical opticians you could visit. And without being able to try on a million pairs before making a decision, how do you find the perfect pair for your face?

Those with rounded faces always look great in more square or rectangular specs. They create a bold statement and add angles to the face in all the right places.

If you have a strong, square jaw line, you would benefit from a pair of oval or circular glasses. These soften the shape of the face. Combining a round set with a bold frame color will also balance out the proportion of facial features.

Oval-shaped faces have full reign. They often have perfectly proportioned faces and as such, should look for a pair of glasses that isn’t too big or too small.

Lovely heart-shaped faces work best with a bottom-heavy pair of frames, or completely rimless options if you’re a little shyer about your features.

Although this is a general rule of thumb, it largely depends on whether you’re confident with your face shape, or want your glasses to balance out your features.

My Glasses Had to be Replaced Because They Were Old, and Filled With Scratches

The frames

While the above advice determines the shape of the lens, you’ll also need to consider the frames. Luckily, this is all down to personal taste. You might want a standout set to add personality to your work uniform, or a trendy pair that serve more like an accessory than a functional piece.

Colors should complement your style, as well as your hair and eye color.

Comfort features

Lastly, look out for features that you know are more comfortable. If you have to wear glasses every day, comfort is incredibly important and can’t be remedied after purchase.

Straight temple glasses are ideal for everyday use. These frames don’t curve completely around the ear, but gently hug the head to keep them in place.

Rubber nose pads, or adjustable options, will prevent the frame from rubbing the skin on your nose. If you’ve ever lost a nose pad on your sunglasses, you know how this feels... not good.

Finally, the bridge fit of the glasses is worth further research. A bridge that’s too wide will inevitably keep slipping down your face, while one that’s too small will cause discomfort.

My Niece Miss Margaret had to Get Glasses as Well

Finding the perfect glasses online can be tricky. Some brands offer a “try before you buy” option, where you can try frames that have been delivered in the post, before making your decision. Other sites allow you to try them on virtually using an integrated camera. But, generally speaking, the decisions are all down to you and what you like. Whatever you choose, we’re sure you’ll look beaut!

@Firmoo Optical Prescription Glasses Review

Guess what? Isaak's glasses came in. He has 20/20 vision, and an astigmatism on the one side. His doctor thought it would be good to get glasses to fix the astigmatism, while he's young. I debated because his vision is 20/20.

What I like about Firmoo Optical https://www.firmoo.com: They have someone there to help you at any time + They let you upload a photo to try on glasses.

I had to ask if we should be looking at adult, or child sized glasses. They said, "Children's because they come in different sizes."

We didn't try on too many pairs. Why? Because Isaak was stuck on having black frames. He didn't even want to try anything else.

New glasses for back to school time.

We did get a school plan, for the fall. For now they plan on having the children present only 1/2 of the time to keep class sizes down. I think it's best Isaak leaves his glasses at home. Then there's less chance of them getting lost, or damaged.

We did add things:

  • No scratch lenses
  • Blue light protection
  • A cleaning cloth

So our free pair that I got to review, ended up costing money. At least they'll be more protected.

Prescription:

The prescription was easy to upload. I was a little worried that it would be a problem that they butchered Isaak's name. According to Target, Isaak Apel is now Isaac Apple. I even corrected them when I walked in the door.

Shipping:

It didn't take long at all to get the glasses! They shipped them out fast!

I told Isaak that I want him to wear them while he reads, and is on any device.

Cleaning Cloth:

The cleaning cloth is graffiti cool!

Isaak Needs Glasses Sort of, Kind of, Not Really

Isaak's pediatrician said, "Isaak you look far sighted. Time to go get your eyes checked." I don't know how someone can look like they need glasses, but he's the doctor.

I called up Target to get him in, for an eye exam. They said the appointment would have to be a few weeks out because everyone was coming in to get their eyes checked with the close down from COVID-19.

I was so ready to cancel the appointment with looking for jobs, possibly having an interview or starting a job on the same day.

It all seemed to work out. We went in, he tried on a few pairs, but refused to try any more. He did play a prank on Mica. My idea! I shot a photo of him with a pair of glasses on, and sent it saying Isaak needed them.

I corrected his name from Isaac April to Isaak Apel.

Mica told Isaak during the exam that they stick needles in his eyes. He knew better. He has a fear of needles, so the thought made him nervous. Just puffs of air went into his eyes.

His eyes tested fine. His left eye does have astigmatism like mine. It's oh so slight. She put the stuff in to dilate his eyes, and said it would be a few minutes. She wrote him out a script, put it in an envelope, and handed it to me. The lady upfront had us pay, she said, "Goodbye!" and we were on our way.

Off to the tax man. We got some tax form just last month from the year before. What the heck? Aren't all those forms supposed to come before tax time? As we got to the tax guy, we got a call from Target, "Where's Isaak? The eye doctor needs to see him." I'm new to getting eyes checked, so when they said, "Goodbye!" I thought that was it. Tax man said the form was nothing to worry about. I wish they told me just to email them it, instead of coming in.

I ran Isaak back, after a major cleaning she was ready for him. He's fine. He should get his eyes dilated more! The boy went home, and slept like a baby.

I did mention to Isaak that I'd get him glasses if I got some to review. I did get a pair to review. The review will come soon. Get this...the prescription she plopped into an envelope had, "Isaac April" not the corrected "Isaak Apel". Then to order, they wanted a PD number. I had no idea what that is. They recommend a doctor figure out that number. Oh joy! We did our best to figure it out. Seeing they are closed. Travis deals with measurements a lot at work.

Here's a view of Isaak, with glasses:

He'll just wear them at home.

The "Free" pair of glasses ended up costing a bit with all the extras: Lens coating for finger prints, blue light protection, a cloth for cleaning, and shipping. It adds up! Hopefully they take his prescription with his name spelled all wrong.

As for me, I haven't even worn my glasses or rings, since COVID shut things down. I have 20/20 vision. I just have an astigmatism like Isaak. I get tired of my lenses fogging up with wearing a mask, and I don't want to touch my face if I don't absolutely have to. I wash my hands more if my rings are aren't on.

What about you? Do you wear glasses, or contacts?

Random Tid Bits

  1. Have you ever taken one of those colored personality tests? I'm always pretty even across the board. One color isn't a lot stronger than another. Either I'm confused, or I'm a well rounded person.

  2. I have a first year student that wanted to know how I grade. I'm assuming she wondered why she got a B, and not her usual A that she got in her high school art class. I said, "I grade on the points that I have on the handout, which are also listed on the grade slip. I think about the good and bad examples I showed in class, and think about if you followed some of what I discussed in those pieces. What I've covered in class is pretty important; have you been listening? Finally I grade on what the body of student's work looks like. Then I ask another teacher to see if they agree on what order I have in the line up of grading. There's a lot more to it, than it may seem. Partly it's subjective, but mostly it's about having trained eyes."

She looked at me blankly. I think she wanted her work graded much like a math worksheet would be graded. #3 is wrong, and #4 is right.

Artwork isn't really graded like that. I do write on their grade slip things they can approve upon, and they have a week to get it back to me.

  3. I've felt a bit like I've been dragging all week. Isaak got the stomach flu late Saturday night. He was sick all Sunday. I got it Monday at the tail end of work. I felt awful! Travis got it a little after me. I had to tease him because he kept telling Isaak he needed to eat bread when he wasn't feeling well. My mom and I said, "Clear liquids first". When Travis was sick I kept saying, "Eat some bread! How about some pizza?" Mica got it on Tuesday night, but it never amounted to anything. He just slept and slept.

  4. I finally went in to get my eyes tested. If you remember I didn't do the best on my driver's test for the vision part. I didn't want to get my eyes tested because I didn't know if it was polyps pushing on my eyes, allergies, or actually my eyes. I finally made it into an eye doctor. My one astigmatism, and other eye that doesn't have one are basically playing tug of war. I actually see pretty well. So I'm getting glasses as soon as they come in.

  5. Do you remember the kid that got attacked by a gator on Disney's turf? It happened awhile back. The little boy that died is from here. The parents haven't talked in public until now. What they have done to honor his name is truly wonderful!

Holiday Specs Review

I've always loved objects that transform something into something else. Such as disappearing ink. One product that I discovered last year was Holiday Specs. They instantly transform Christmas lights, fireworks, candles or any bright point of light into magical shapes.

We got a lot of them that our magic Elf On the Shelf - Brita left behind.

Each pair of glasses turns the lights into different shapes.

This Makes a Great Gift:

  • They'd be perfect stocking stuffers
  • They'd work wonderfully on top of packages
  • They're perfect White Elephant gifts
  • A teacher to give to her students
  • Party favors
  • Fundraisers

Illusions:

Their holographic lenses bend the light creating magical illusions.

  • Snowmen
  • Snowflakes
  • Candy Canes
  • Ornaments
  • Elves
  • Christmas Stars
  • Angels
  • Santas
  • Reindeer
  • Gingerbread men
These were all seen on the same lights, but with different glasses.

With more than 10 million sold at retail, people of all ages have witnessed this mysterious phenomenon all over the globe. They sell other things besides these Holiday Specs. If you don't celebrate Christmas, jump over to their site to look at other specs. They have: Decoders, Happy Eyes - Valentines, 3D Fireworks Glasses, Spooky Specs and more.

The costs range on what all you buy, and if you buy in bulk.

Our boys most certainly enjoy this time of year! What is your favorite holiday?

Disclaimer: I got Holiday Specs to Review. I wrote this post, and was not influenced at all with an opinion. I only review things that I find interesting, or that would benefit my readers.

Classic Aviator Style Metal Frame Sunglasses Review

One thing that my boys have been hinting at is that they want new sunglasses. I even found a pair of Thomas the Train sunglasses in the backseat, so it certainly was time for them to get new glasses.

Mica's 11 1/2. I decided to get him adult sunglasses. I went with Classic Aviator Style Metal Frame Sunglasses Colored Lens. He's getting them in his stocking. I never thought to give the boy's sunglasses in their stocking until this year. They've always been an Easter thing to get in my mind.

Colors:

One thing that's really cool about these glasses is that they come in so many colors!

I got him the ones with green lenses, but truth be told I like the red lenses the best.

  • Blue Lenses
  • Dark Blue Lenses
  • Green Lenses
  • Purple Lenses
  • Red Lenses
  • Yellow Lenses

What color do you think you'd choose?

All styles regardless of their color are $9.99. I don't want to spend a lot on my kids when it comes to sunglasses. They have been known to fight over them.

Build:

All the glasses have the same build: Metal Frames with Plasti Lenses that are Non-Polarized. They lenses are 59 millimeters. I always have trouble picturing sizes, so even when I'm told how big something is, it doesn't register.

My top love is that the lenses have 100% protection against harmful UVA/UVB rays.

My second love is that they are lightweight. That just makes them comfortable.

Do you have a favorite pair of sunglasses that you like to wear?

Disclaimer: I got these glasses for a discounted price in exchange for an honest review. This company in no way influenced me on my review.

WW: Apel Nerds {Linky}

The boys painted wooden glasses this week. Isaak had to have lenses on his. The lenses were the plastic from the apple packaging from Costco.

Isaak is cute right?

More like mega silly!

Mica pulls off a nerd very well. It's all those books he's been reading.

GlassesUSA.com with a Discount Code For You to Use!

Our family: Daddy, Mica, Isaak and I are really lucky that we have never had to wear glasses.

My mom has had them since she was 2 years old. My dad had to get glasses as he aged. It is in our genes to have glasses.

I'm sure as I age I'll have to get some. When the time comes I want to get eyeglasses that are fashionable and not have to spend an arm and a leg for them

If it were up to Mica, he would get glasses now! He so wants glasses like the College Black ones featured below. Then he would look like Clark Kent. Superman is his favorite super hero!

GlassesUSA.com has many stylish options:

College Black - $125 $78
They also have a GlassesUSA.com Try-It! Virtual mirror, try it on! Here I am in glasses:

Take a look at their Virtual Mirror Feature yourself:

It's a great thing they have the Virtual mirror because I thought I would look the best with brown frames. My hair is brown/grey. The brown glasses looked silly on me. They sure do have a lot of selection in their glasses frames.

I love how their prices are marked down! They show you what the original prices are and what each pair of glasses are marked down to. 60% of all adults wear eyeglasses. Many are paying too much for eyewear.

They have a whole selection for women, men, bifocals, trifocals and prescription eyeglasses for sunglasses.

GlassesUSA.com has a wonderful shipping section. It tells you how long it will take for your glasses to be made, and how long it will take to ship to you. They also have a section for customer service. I love that their phone number is on the top of their website to help with orders.

He Wants Glasses

One of my friends posted today that her daughter wants glasses. She actually cried when her pediatrician said she didn't need any.

Mica told me this weekend that he wanted glasses. I just forgot about it; until I read about my friend's daughter.

Why does Mica want glasses?

Because he wants to look like Clark Kent.

He also keeps running down the hallway to and from his room. Then pretends to open his shirt up. In fact lately he's been wearing a button down shirt over a t-shirt. All so he can open it up like Superman does.

He told me that Superman III is his favorite movie right now.

My Nephew Got Clark Kent Glasses

The boy's Cousin Emerson got Clark Kent Glasses.

Mica said, "Now all he needs is a cape Mom!"

Emerson can now see. I guess he's been looking all over today. :)

I loved seeing little Emerson in this sweater! It used to be Isaak's. See:

iMax

Grandma and Grandpa Spiehs took Isaak to see an iMax movie yesterday.

Grandpa kept trying to get Isaak to wear his 3D glasses. He would not leave them on.

At dinner I asked Isaak about the movie. He said, "I don't remember what it was called. Grandpa kept trying to get me to wear the glasses, but I didn't want to wear them!" I said, "Why?" Isaak said, "Because those glasses scared me Mom. When I put them on I felt like I was in the movie. That scared me!"

Scribble Glasses

I think these glasses are cute. I even thought they were fun enough for my WW. Daddy thinks they are ugly. They are, but in a cute sort of way. Isaak was really proud of his cute/ugly glasses.

Here they are:

Day Out With Mom

Today I was bound and determined to stay out of the house. Yesterday I was cooped up in the house all day. Balance is good, right? Not only that, but Daddy sort of kicked us out. He worked LATE last night and LATE tonight just so he could cast some sculptures today.

I took the boys to an unfamilar park. They ran and ran. Each one pretended they were the Gingerbread Man.

Then we went shopping. Trying to get boys to try on clothes is interesting. Especially when it's trying clothes behind a small curtain, like in Gymboree. For some reason they wouldn't stop laughing and dancing mostly in the buff behind the curtain.

I wanted to get their pictures taken at Picture People, but I called and cancelled. Mica has a front tooth that is so loose, it looks like a wooden peg hanging out of this mouth. Isaak has a cold sore or something similar below his bottom lip in the corner. I was sick yesterday, so I wasn't in the mood for picking out what they were going to wear. Another day, another time for pictures.

We ate lunch at Wendy's.

We went over to Aunt Terra's house to A) Deliver Emerson his new sunglasses! I did a review of Baby BanZ here.

B) The boys wanted to play with 2 of their other cousin's Elijah and Evan. So they did for a good while.

Then we went to a cheaper movie Hugo. Both boys got into it, but it was way too long for them. It was also way over Isaak's head. He kept asking me questions all the way through it. They must of liked it though. They wouldn't stop talking about it at dinner. They were both trying to tell Daddy what the movie was about; it was funny. Isaak was all over the place with his explanation of the movie. They were over talking one another. Then Isaak would get mad because Mica wouldn't let him talk.

I wore the boys out. They were in bed by 7:30.

Bee

Here's Mica's newest writing:

He had Daddy's help.
Mica read to me part of a phonics book last night. He could have read more, but got tired of sounding out the words. It ended with, "Mommy can you just read it to me?" I did. He had already read me part of the book. It was at the end of the day.
